Scholarly Resource Development includes Acquisitions, Collection Development and Assessment, Interlibrary Loan Borrowing and Scholarly Communications. The department supports academic learning and research by acquiring scholarly resources through sustainable acquisition strategies and Open Access models. Collaborating with faculty, subject specialists, publishers and consortia partners, the department leverages resources, manages gift donations and assesses collection and user needs to build the University Libraries’ collection of print, multi-media and electronic holdings.

Acquisitions is responsible for acquiring all materials, including books, serials, DVDs, CDs and other formats  for the Libraries' collections (not including Government Information, Law and archival holdings). This involves ordering and receiving items and preparing them for circulation in addition to keeping track of expenditures, budgets, and vendor payments so that everything balances at the end of each fiscal year.

When items are ordered or received on approval, they are entered into the Chinook database. This is done so that everyone can see if an item is being acquired. Anyone who wants the item can place a hold on it. The Circulation Desk will then notify you when the item is ready for check out.

The primary responsibility of Collection Development is to select and assess library materials needed to support the educational and research mission of the University of Colorado Boulder. Collection Development develops the Libraries' collections of electronic resources and print materials, allocates the collections budget, and formulates collection development policies.

The department supports a large number of Subject Specialists, who in addition to providing materials selection, also perform faculty liason and student outreach activities to ensure that collections are responsive to users' needs.

As part of our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service, CU Libraries borrows materials that are not available in the CU Libraries from other libraries and vendors. This includes materials not owned by CU Libraries, as well as items that are checked out, lost or missing.
