The Campbell Award
The Campbell Award is named after Marie and Martha Campbell, sisters who joined the Libraries staff in 1945 and have remained active volunteers since their retirement. The award is presented annually to a library staff member for outstanding contributions to the libraries and includes a $1000 prize. Martha Campbell started in the Libraries as a part-time assistant in Government Publications. She remained in that department until her retirement in 1989, moving through the ranks up to Library Technician in 1975. Marie Campbell worked in the Education Library for 30 years. When that branch was incorporated into the main library in 1979, she moved to the Periodicals Room as a Library Technician until her retirement in 1990.

Lucile Zellar, 2011
Lucile Zellar was awarded the 2011 Martha and Marie Campbell Staff Recognition Award for almost twenty years of outstanding service to the University Libraries. She was recognized both for her attention to detail as well as the great lengths to which she goes to support the employees in the Libraries. In addition, her liaison work with campus Human Resources helps to maintain the reputation of the Libraries as a valuable campus partner. There are few staff or faculty in the Libraries who have not been personally helped by Lucy!

Leanne Kunkle Walther, 2010
Leanne Kunkle Walther of the Boulder campus Government Information Library was awarded the University Libraries 2010 Martha and Marie Campbell Staff Recognition Award. Walther was recognized for 19 years of exceptional reference work, her knowledge of databases, skill as an instructor and presenter; and processing of special project gifts. Formerly a staff member in the CU law library for 15 years, her skill with complex legal questions and persistence in finding answers were noted by nominators. The letters written in support of her were lavish in their praise: “thorough,” “persistent,” “completely dedicated,” “collegial by nature,” a “jewel in our collection,” – even “our secret weapon.”
Meredith Callahan, 2009
Meredith Rogers Callahan was recognized for 36 years of highly dedicated service to the Libraries, most recently as webmaster for Chinook. Meredith assumed the leadership role for the catalog’s redesign. In addition she functions as a liaison between Systems and Research and Instruction, and her team spirit was highlighted. Meredith also contributed to the planning for both the Research Commons and the Information Commons. One of the letters of recommendation noted that “Meredith is the quintessential behind-the-scenes support person, the better she performs her job, the less we are inclined to notice. Yet, without her, the library would hardly be able to function.”
Meri Willett, 2008
Meri Willett, head of the catalog management team, is responsible for the maintenance of the entire Chinook database, containing over 2.8 million bibliographic records and over 700,000 authority records. She has worked in the libraries for 30 years. She was cited for her problem-solving skills and contributions beyond her department, including tutorials and training sessions, search committees and library-wide committees and task forces.
Cassandra M. Volpe, 2007
Cassandra M. Volpe, archivist in the American Music Research Center, was recognized for increasing and improving access to material in the center, especially the Glenn Miller Archive, which is the largest collection in the world dedicated to preserving Miller’s legacy. She was also praised for her work with donors to the collection, including Nick Perito, Perry Como’s arranger. Perito’s contribution to the center, and many others handled by Volpe, benefit CU and the entire state of Colorado.
Maureen Van Camp, 2006
Maureen Van Camp, Head of the Media Library, has been in the library for nearly 37 years. Nominators cited her commitment to professional teamwork and public service excellence and her leadership, planning foresight, and commitment to progress. She is noted as an individual of great enthusiasm, optimism, creativity, and self-initiative, whose worldview is marked by a deeply held sense of social responsibility and a “can do” attitude in all areas. She was particularly praised for her student assistant training program. Van Camp has also been a leader in recycling, both within the libraries and in her community, and an advocate for breast cancer awareness.
Cheryl Koelling, 2005
Cheryl Koelling, assistant to the Associate Director for Public Services, has worked in the library since 1997. Her award citation lauds the invaluable support and assistance she provides many departments in the Libraries in addition to exemplary performance in her own office.
Ruth Leahy, 2004
Ruth Leahy was recognized for excellent service to the Libraries and assistance to her colleagues for 17 years, and, in particular, for serving on the Strategic Planning Task Force and Social Committee. She was cited for her knowledge and teaching of subjects related to computer use, her ability to edit web pages, her outstanding letters of support, and the high regard in which she is held by her colleagues.
Reggie Carlyon, 2003
Regina (“Reggie”) Carlyon was cited for “her devotion and care for the people who work with her, as well as her unwavering ability to take excellent care of library patrons.” Nominators noted that: “Her bibliographic expertise is truly amazing and she often can verify citations and find documents when no one else can.” “She has trained students and staff to her high standard of customer service. In addition, she creates a warm and inviting work environment for the student and staff employees,” “She continues to be a great friend to all in the Libraries and a continual source of good humor and positive energy.”
Linda Helgoth, 2002
Linda Helgoth has worked for 15 years in a variety of library departments, in both public and technical services. She was cited as one who actively applies an abiding sense of the interconnectedness of technical and public service functions in each of her professional job responsibilities. She was also described as someone who takes on new challenges that would overwhelm most people.
Curt Williams, 2001
Curt Williams has worked in the Libraries since 1992, and currently works in both Norlin Circulation and the Leonard H. Gemmill Engineering Library. He was described by his nominators as articulate, objective, reasonable, confident, and inspiring respect at all levels of the Libraries. “During a time of enormous change, Williams worked patiently, efficiently and tirelessly to disseminate information, teach new skills, and maintain a high level of competence and morale. As chair of the Libraries Advisory Board and the Libraries Staff Association, he dealt with system-wide problems and managed to bring various groups together to discuss and often resolve long-standing difficulties.”

Linda Vosburgh was recognized for her performance as Acting Head of the Preservation Department and her service as Staff Council and Libraries committees.
Pat McClure, 1999
Patricia, “Pat,” McClure was honored for her “unselfish commitment to the overall mission of the Libraries…and many years of experience…as the cataloger of state and foreign [government documents].” According to nominators: “Pat’s attitude toward her work also applies to her interactions with patrons of the Libraries….training them to search the catalog and CD-ROM databases effectively and efficiently. If Pat is unable to help patrons complete their research successfully, she will…contact them by phone or email with additional sources of information.” “Pat possesses many fine qualities that contribute to the betterment of the Libraries. These include the courage to speak honestly about important issues when others are reluctant to speak, and the willingness to stick with difficult tasks so desired goals are brought to fruition.”

Diana Anderson, a Library Technician III in the Cataloging Department, was recognized for her commitment to excellence and contributions to Chinook, the Library of Congress database and OCLC.
Helene McHendry, 1997
Helene McHendry, a Library Technician III in Serials Cataloging, was cited as a superb teacher, highly knowledgeable cataloger, dedicated problem solver, and valued colleague.
Jessica Jones, 1996
Jessica Jones, head of catalog maintenance, was described as “an exemplar…she has a strong sense of purpose…and brings to her post…a no-nonsense yet affable approach to interpersonal relationships…and a persona marked by intelligence, frankness, and honesty.” And, “Her professional attitude, composure, integrity and humor [are] a model for staff excellence.”
Brad Arnold, 1995
Brad Arnold, a Library Technician I with the Libraries for eight years, was honored for “his conscientiousness, dedication, intelligence, and ability.” Arnold’s job in the shelving unit was noted as one of the least recognized and most critical in library operations.
Kris McCusker, 1994
Kris McCusker was presented the first annual Martha and Marie Campbell award for Staff Excellence to honor the dedication, initiative, creativity, and intelligence she has displayed in her work. McCusker joined the Serials Department in 1980 as a Library Assistant I, working in the Periodicals Room. In 1990, she transferred to the Special Collections Department and to a LAII position. Her promotion to Library Technician in 1993 was acknowledgement of the considerable responsibility she acquired in Special Collections.
