Borrowing Privileges: Patron Types
Borrowing privileges vary widely depending on patron type. To find out your patron type, first select from the three categoies below and then review the type descriptions. University of Colorado: Boulder students, staff, & faculty
Graduate students currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program at UCB are automatically registered with the Libraries.
Undergraduate students currently enrolled at UCB are automatically registered with the Libraries.
Continuing Education Students
Students enrolled in Continuing Education programs at UCB are automatically registered with the Libraries. Students in graduate programs (e.g., CAETE, MBA & Executive MBA programs) or enrolled in graduate classes through Continuing Ed receive the same privileges as other UCB graduate students (See link below). Students enrolled in undergraduate classes receive the same privileges as other UCB undergraduates.
Various types of special students, including Senior Auditors, must stop by the Norlin Circulation desk to be registered for library privileges
Faculty of the University of Colorado and staff of the UCB campus are automatically registered with the Libraries via file transfer from Payroll.
Members of the University of Colorado, Boulder Alumni Association may obtain a library card with proof of current membership. Alumni Association members must also be Colorado residents to get a library card.
Institute & Workshop Participants
Participants in institutes and workshops are eligible for short-term privileges at the Libraries. Depending upon the arrangements that have been made in advance, you will either be included on a list of participants provided by the Institute/Workshop Director, or you may be required to provide proof of registration in the program. In either case, you must present a photo ID at the Main Circulation Desk in Norlin Library.
University of Colorado: other campuses
Faculty of other University of Colorado campuses are automatically registered with the Libraries. Staff form other UC campuses are eligible for library privileges at UCB. Proof of current employment should be presented at the main Circulation Desk in Norlin Library.
Students at the Auraria, Colorado Springs and Health Sciences may borrow books using their UC ID, but must register first at the main Circulation Desk in Norlin Library.
Non-University of Colorado patrons:
Friends of the Libraries > Silver | Gold | Platinum
Colorado residents 18 and older, who are not currently affiliated with the University of Colorado, are eligible to join the Friends of the Libraries organization. A Friends membership includes privileges which exceed those of Public Patrons.
Platinum (Businesses and Corporations)
Please contact the Friends of the Libraries for more information on corporate accounts.Colorado residents 18 and older are eligible. There is a $75.00 per year charge for basic Public Patron privileges ($65.00 per year for seniors 65 and older). To apply, you must provide either a current Colorado driver's license or the Colorado state-issued photo ID at the main Circulation Desk in Norlin Library.
Reciprocal Faculty Borrowing Program
A program of the Research Libraries Advisory Committee to OCLC (Online Computer Library Center, Inc.) that allows faculty members of participating institutions borrowing privileges and on-site access to the collections of some of the most important research libraries in North America. Participating Universities.
Staff, Faculty, and Students from other Colorado Academic Institutions
Staff, Faculty, and Students from other Colorado Academic Institutions which are State-funded receive privileges equivalent to Public Patrons, but are not charged for access to the UCB Libraries. Present your current Staff, Faculty, or Student ID at the main Circulation Desk in Norlin Library.
University Libraries Research Partners Program
Non-profit research institutions with University, State, or Government affiliation may apply for library privileges.
Students from universities outside of Colorado may obtain a Visiting Scholar card upon presentation of a letter from a qualified UCB academic sponsor and a photo ID. Generally speaking, UCB academic departments do not issue such letters without having been contacted in advance by a counterpart at the student's home university. Sponsoring letters should be presented at the main Circulation Desk in Norlin Library.
