I. Purpose:
Juvenile Literature materials are purchased and maintained by the Libraries
primarily to support courses in juvenile literature given in the School of
Education.
A. Curricular emphasis:
Classic and contemporary with emphasis in multicultural literature.

Literary criticism, literary response

Bueno Center for Multicultural Education

Teachers, Educators, Parents and children, Interlibrary Loan.
H. Other Considerations:
Illustrators as well as authors are equally important considerations when purchasing materials.
II. General Collection Guidelines:
A. Methods of Acquiring Materials:
Special orders motivated by current reviews. A special effort is made to acquire award-winning books. Gifts-in-kind.
B. Languages:
Primarily English, some Spanish, others occasionally.
C. Chronological Guidelines:
Primarily current works although older materials will be purchased if needed for collection.
D. Geographical Guidelines:
Primarily United States publishers. Emphasis on Colorado authors.
E. Treatment of Subject:
Mostly fiction. Majority is juvenile literature with some adolescent literature. Efforts made to acquire materials dealing with all cultures. Most award winners purchased.
F. Types of Materials:
Primarily books. Audio/video seldom purchased. Materials should be suitable for circulation. Indexes both paper and electronic.
G. Date of Publication:
Primarily current, but some retrospective.
H. Other General Considerations:
The Libraries’ circulating collection of juvenile literature is known as the Virginia Westerberg Collection and is housed on the third floor of Norlin Library. Also on the third floor within the Special Collections Department, the Emily Wood Epsteen Collection is housed. This heavily illustrated collection consists primarily of American and English books published between the 1870s and 1930s as well as translations of fairy/folk tales from Europe and the Far East. Special Collections also houses the Bloch collection which complements and supports the Epsteen collection. Some older materials housed in off-site storage.
