II. General Collection Guidelines:
A. Method of Acquiring Materials:
Approval plans; special requests from faculty; bibliographer choice from reviews, catalogs, and other sources. Gifts in kind are accepted according to the needs of the collection.
B. Languages:
Music, both in print and in sound, is collected according to the needs and interests of the Library’s patrons, regardless of the language of its texts or notes. Works on music, however, are collected primarily in western European languages, and, in particular, in English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish. Other languages are considered according to the needs of the Library’s patrons. General reference materials are collected in all languages, primarily in the Latin alphabet.
C. Chronological Guidelines:
There are no chronological restrictions in the collecting of music. Curricular and research needs will determine the strengths of various periods.
D. Geographical Guidelines:
Music, both in print and in sound, and works on music are acquired on a world-wide basis, with emphasis on Europe and the Americas.
E. Treatment of Subject:
Emphasis is on art music, world music, jazz, etc. rather than on popular music. Popular music materials are selected to support the curriculum of the College of Music, but this is not an area of strength in the College’s programs.
