The Ralph E. Ellsworth Award Nominations

Nominations are being sought for the 2013 Ralph E. Ellsworth Award for Excellence in Librarianship.

Ralph E. Ellsworth viewed the role of academic librarians foremost in terms of intellectual leadership, but his personal characteristics, those best known to his colleagues, friends, and critics were his ambition, affability, outspokenness, and the strength of his convictions.  This award recognizes a member of the Libraries faculty that epitomizes these ideals in their outstanding contributions to the Libraries, the University, or the library profession.

The Ralph E. Ellsworth award may be given in recognition of accomplishments during the most recent year, during a career, or during a specified period of years. Accomplishments recognized may be in one or more of the following three areas:  the practice of librarianship, scholarly work and creative contributions, and service. It carries a monetary prize of $1,000.

Nominations
All members of the University Libraries faculty, except the Dean of Libraries and those who have won the award within the last five years, are eligible for nomination by any member of the faculty or staff.  A faculty member may nominate her/himself.   Nominations should specify if the award is for accomplishments during the most recent year, a career, or during a specified period of years.  The winners from the previous five (5) years have been: Deborah Hollis (2008), Jina Choi Wakimoto (2009), Gene Hayworth (2010) and Caroline Sinkinson (2011), and Steve Mantz (2012).

Selection
The award decision will be made by the Awards, Elections, and Faculty Support Committee on the basis of documentation and letters received in support of the nominations.

Presentation

The award will be formally presented by the Dean of Libraries at the 2013 awards ceremony.  The winner will be informed of the Committee's decision before the award is made.

We look forward to receiving your nominations on the attached Award Nomination Form.

If someone you nominated in the past did not win, feel free to nominate them again.

Note
Committee procedures call for retaining documentation of non-selected candidates for one year and "moving that documentation forward" to the next year if the candidate is re-nominated.  Past candidates will not be re-nominated automatically.

Please submit your nomination and supporting letters to any member of the committee, no later than April 12, 2013.  Late submissions will not be accepted.  Supporting letters are due by April 19, 2013.
