Abstracts and Indexes to Academic or Scholarly Articles (Although many databases contain links to full-text articles, when you find article citations in the index databases, you need to search Chinook to see if University Libraries own that periodical title.)

 

CU Current Index to Statistics
A bibliographic index to publications in statistics and related fields. References are drawn from 111 core journals that are fully indexed, non-core journals from which articles are selected that have statistical content, proceedings and edited books, and other sources. Coverage: 1975 - present.

 

CU Engineering Village 2—Compendex, INSPEC, and NTIS
Compendex is a comprehensive bibliographic database of engineering research literature. Contains references and abstracts to engineering journals, conferences and technical reports. Subject areas include: chemical and process engineering, computers and data processing, applied physics, electronics and communications as well as civil and mechanical engineering. Includes links to full text when available. Coverage: 1884 - present.

INSPEC is a bibliographic database that indexes physics, astronomy and astrophysics, electrical engineering and electronics, computers and control engineering and information technology. The database contains full-text links when available. Coverage: 1898 - present.

The National Technical Information Service (NTIS) database from the U.S. Department of Commerce provides access to unclassified reports from influential U.S. and international government agencies. The database contains over two million critical citations from government departments such as NASA, the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Defense. Most items cited in this database are available in microfiche format in the Government Publications Library. Coverage: 1964-present.

CU MathSciNet
Contains bibliographic citations and signed reviews of mathematical research literature. Electronic version of Current Mathematical Publications and Mathematical Reviews. The database contains full-text links when available. Coverage: 1940 - present.

 

Scitopia

This federated vertical search portal was created through the collaboration of 21 leading science and technology societies. It searches the entire electronic libraries of these societies, including more than three million documents, peer-reviewed journal content and technical conference papers, spanning 150 years of science and technology can be searched through the site. Though the search is freely available, access to many documents requries authentication. Coverage varies.

 

CU SIAM Journals Online
The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) publishes nine peer-reviewed journals in applied mathematics. Browse or search by keyword. The database contains full-text links and citations to Math Reviews when available. Older backfiles of SIAM journals are available from its LOCUS database. Coverage: Abstracts 1995 - present. Full-text dates of coverage varies.

 

CU Zentralblatt Math
Indexes and abstracts topics in pure mathematics (e.g. algebra, logic, topology, geometry, analysis) , probability theory, statistics, mathematical physics, classical, solid and fluid mechanics, numerical mathematics, mathematical programming, theoretical computer science and automata theory, systems theory, control, operations research, economics, information and communication, circuits, coding, cryptography, applications in biology, chemistry, sociology, psychology. The database contains full-text links when available. Coverage: 1931 - present.

 

 

In some article databases, you will see a "Find it at CU" link. Find it at CU will link you from citations to the full text of the desired item in another article database. Pick an Interesting Topic It is easier to express your own opinions and thoughts if you are interested in the topic.

 

Manage Your Time

Many students are tempted to plagiarize because they do not start researching and writing far enough in advance. Start your paper at least 3 weeks before the due date. Plagiarism could compromise your entire academic career. Speak to your professor if you have run out of time.

 

Create a Bibliography as you Research

Record the sources you consult. Include all the bibliographic information needed in your works cited (Author, Title, Pages, Publisher, Year, Volume, Issue).This will help you to cite correctly and to compile your works cited.

 

Take Clear Notes

Designate all direct quotes with quotation marks.

Designate when you are paraphrasing.

Electronic Research and Note taking is the same: Use quotation marks when you cut and paste.

Always note the source/ author.

 

Be Careful with Paraphrasing

Be sure you understand the text.

Do not look at the original source when writing your paraphrase.

Reorganize the information in your own words and in your own style.

Check to be sure you have not used the vocabulary or structure of the original work.

Mention the author near or in your paraphrase.
