Government Publications Interest Group December 1, 1993 Meeting at Denver Public Library Minutes Present: Tim Byrne, Laura Carter, Debbie Hollis from CU Boulder, Wayne Coffey, Rob Jackson from Denver Public Library, Janet Lee from Regis University, Buddy Rooney from the Colorado School of Mines, and Louise Stwalley from Auraria. Announcements Recruitment updates: The Colorado School of Mines hired a new government documents librarian. She's a new graduate from North Carolina and completed an internship at the EPA library. DPL is down to three candidates and is ready for the first round of interviews in their search. The search for a document delivery person is still in progress at Auraria . Minutes: There were no minutes to approve from the October 20, 1993 meeting. Next Meeting: The next GoPig meeting will be held next semester. Thursday seems to be the best day to meet for those present. Tim suggested that a Census workshop on Extract and Tigerline be the focus of the next meeting. He will work out a January meeting date with the Census bureau and announce the result on CoGoPub-L. The group will also meet February 10, 1994. Automated Documents Shelflist: Buddy Rooney discussed the pros and cons of PC File software which is used to check in items. Buddy stated that they will discontinue this process once the Marcive records become available on CARL. Julie Jones Eddy from Colorado College will discuss her experience with an automated shelflist at the February meeting. DPL Patent Depository: Wayne and Rob described the active approach DPL staff uses to assist patrons in patent searches. They also demonstrated the CASSIS CD-ROM databases. Tim asked if patents are available through ILL. The answer is yes they are for deposit accounts or the requestor will be billed. A $200 minimum is required to set up a deposit account that is good over any amount of time. Once this is established the patron can get the patent for $6/patent. The difference between tradename and trademark was reviewed. Much confusion exist about these terms . A helpful example was offered to highlight the difference -- Wheaties is the trademark and General Mills is the tradename. DPL has federal and military specifications and military standards. Feel free to refer patrons. H.R. 3400: Tim clarified the current status of HR 3400. GPO Unions put pressure on the 2nd amendment. The section about moving the public printer to the executive branch was removed. The sentiment is that in general people are upset about HR 3400 due to its being poorly written. It is hoped that the bill will end up looking like Rose's original amendment. There was one line in the bill that cancels all other print operations through the executive branch. This is opposite of what the original bill intended to do. Tim recommended that the one to watch in the Senate in the future is Wendell Ford. Any favorable amendment will probably come from Ford. When asked, Tim also explained that there is no unified position on which plan of action the library community supports. At Rose's request the Dupont Circle Group was created to speak on behalf of depository libraries. The result of that conference was a watered down response to H.R. 3400. Tim remarked that the lack of discussion about this issue on GovDoc-L was pretty amazing. He added that the vote in the House was close, partisan, and involved a heated debate. Tim recommends watching the fine tuning that will occur in the Senate in the future. CARL Gossip: No news to report officially. The final recommendation for the new UCB system may go the University Chancellor by Christmas. Government Publications Integration Taskforce: Louise stated that she can't say that anything has happened. The gap tape has not been loaded. The current issue is funding and where the directors will find $30,000. CCLS Workshop on Government Information and the Internet: The workshop will be held on December 9, 1993 at Regis University. No agenda has been set. Tim will fax the final version to CCLS once he coordinates it. New Business: Tim announced that Suzanne Taylor requested that the group discuss the Digital Quad maps. CSU wants a complete collection and Suzanne spoke to Elaina about this. DPL will select all other states for CSU. Regionals have the option to select other states. Tim will decide once he speaks to the CU Geology department. He may select Colorado and the surrounding states. This issue has been discussed on the Region-L listserve. The USGS might get all the digital quad maps. The meeting adjourned. Respectively submitted, Debbie Hollis
