GoPig minutes June 16, 1994 GoPig Meeting at Denver University Present: Tom Tyler, Lisa Villiere, Lisa Harris (DU), Sharon Partridge (Jefferson County Public Library), Julie Jones-Eddy (Colorado College), Rob Jackson (DPL), Louise Treff, Marit MacArthur (Auraria), Yolanda Maloney, Tim Byrne, Laura Carter, and Debbie Hollis (CU Boulder). Announcement: Aurora Public will soon have email capabilities. Confession: No minutes are available of the April 29th GoPig meeting. Next meeting: Tentatively planned for July 21st at CU Boulder. (Has since been rescheduled to Thursday, July 28th.) HR445 update: The House made amendments that cut the GPO and DLP budgets. There is an effort to restore this funding in the Senate and thus far it has been partially restored. There will be a conference committee. Tim urged everyone to contact their congressman. GPO Access: Discussion involved whether anyone had tried this yet. Julie Jones-Eddy said that she'd registered but it took her a whole day to do so. She had to call D.C. to get it figured out. Technically she's not up on the system yet. It seems that it is confusing to figure what will work best -- WAIS access in which client software and Windows is needed or SWAIS, an Internet connection in which you cannot download a TIF file or use Adobe Acrobat software. Tom Tyler noted that he uses NCSA telecommunications software and has experienced screen problems when dialing into the bulletin board. Julie's advice was to get the instructions and read them thoroughly. It was stressed that each library will have to register even if it is already registered for the Federal Bulletin Board. LOCIS: Julie asked if LOCIS only provides digests of current legislation. (Yes it does -- the House legislative system has future plans to provide full text information.) MARCIVE update: Louise Treff reported that database 99 on CARL, the Marcive tape file has been loaded through May 1994. CARL requests that everyone tests this to see if it works well thus far. It will be made available to the public soon. Rob Jackson stated that DPL's records may not have been extracted yet. The CARL taskforce will not exist after July leaving GoPig as the major source for exchanging information. Collection Development/resource sharing: Currently all CARL directors are considering a proposal that recommends resource sharing with regard to microfiche, among all Colorado federal depository libraries. Tim announced that CU Boulder does provide fiche to fiche copying. A message was routed to all directors that requested a list of microfiche series to consider dropping. Tom noted that good bibliographic and item records would be most helpful to make sound collection development and resource sharing decisions. Tim stated that he did not personally see the proposal and asked if there was any mention of stricter discards? The discussion turned to discards and it was stated that general descriptions of large microfiche collections to be discarded can be posted to COGOPUB-L. That should suffice in place of a title-by-title list. It was also recommended that discards can be advertised in CCLS publications as well for nondepository libraries. Rob stated that DPL can be relied on for the older DOE microfiche. Louise expressed concern that everyone would become dependent on the regionals for everything. It was stated that regionals should be the back up for selectives to help save selectives space. Tim said that CU Boulder has a slight gap in the DOE fiche (around 1977-78) but can be relied on for the vast majority of the collection. Claims: Sharon stated that she is not receiving a lot of stuff and is not able to make a claim. She wondered if others were experiencing this also. Tim stated that regionals are experiencing this too. This was discussed on REGIONAL-L and most recently the regional claim policy was changed. Legislate: Discussion involved the need to pay $3,000 for this service when a great deal of information is available on the Internet. Legislate still provides the full text of introduced bills which LOCIS does not. New business: Rob provided a DPL update. He noted their serial set crisis in which it had to be moved in 24 hours to avoid water and cement damage. The set is currently in 6 locations. Right now it looks like DPL will close after the new year and will remain closed for 3 months to conduct the move into the new building. The big issue is the patent and trademark material. Thus far it seems that this collection will be unavailable during this 3 month period. General telephone reference may be provided during the closure but no firm decision has been made. Government documents located in DPL's basement will be out of commission for most of next year. Staff is currently looking at what to keep. The group took a tour of DU. The meeting adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Debbie Hollis
