GoPig Meeting July 28, 1994 Colorado State University Student Union Present: Louise Treff - Auraria, Mark Anderson - UNC, Janet Lee - Regis University, Fred Schmidt, Lou Anderson, Suzanne Taylor, Awilda Reyes-Lucas - CSU, Laura Carter, Tim Byrne, Martha Jo Sani, and Debbie Hollis - CU Boulder. Minutes of the July 21, 1994 meeting were approved. Next Meeting: UNC in Greely will host the next GoPig meeting September 29, 1994 at 10:30 a.m. CLA update: Debbie Hollis will conduct a 90 minute Internet workshop at the CLA conference in Keystone on November 6 at 10:30 a.m. It is called "A Basic Internet Government Documents Collection." She also announced that she recently conducted a continuing ed Internet course for the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar. The legal community is beginning to discover the legislative and regulatory resources on the Internet. CARL update: Louise reported that everyone got their item selection to Marcive. CARL is putting in new monthly tape loads. They still need to extract DPL records. CARL has not switched database 99 to public mode yet. Louise detailed problems such as the Treasury Departments report about the Waco incident appears in database 83 but not in 99. Fred described a CSU project where paper copies of hearings, roughly 300 titles were loaded, all of which were in database 99 except for 5 titles. Database 83 showed only one third of the same set of titles. Fred stressed looking at a whole group of consecutive records and cautioned that gaps can be found in a group. Tim noted that the GPO tapeload might have entered something in an OCLC field which deleted it from the tapeload. Fred hoped that it was a Marcive problem while Louise said that it could be that Marcive didn't extract the records correctly. Fred asked about the status of MoCat. Tim responded that it is an issue that is being looked at by GPO and JCP and it's a costly index. They are looking at providing short records. Louise attended the Cataloging Committee of GODORT where it was announced that the group will conduct a survey about MoCat. She asked the group to please let her know if you find anything funny in database 99. CARL could be experiencing an indexing problem. GIS workshop: Louise Treff(Auraria), Suzanne Taylor (CSU), Buddy Rooney and Lisa Stromberg from the School of Mines attended the workshop in Iowa City. Louise and Suzanne agreed that this was an outstanding workshop. It provided an introduction to GIS and its terminology, discussed TIGER, and aerial photography. Workshop participants worked with a program called Alexander and spent a lot of time in a Mac lab. Suzanne said that what was most helpful was understanding the data and the kinds of information that people will be asking for in the future. This was really a technical course on what GIS actually is. Tim announced that CU Boulder is looking at the future of its map library. Many maps will be digitized. This raises questions of how to archive these maps as well as the issue of accuracy. Louise volunteered to host the next GoPig meeting once their GIS system is up and running. Discussion of GIS concluded with the announcement that the Iowa GIS workshop may be offered again in the future. Old business: CU Boulder does not charge for microfiche through ILL if the order is in state. This includes NTIS and CIS fiche. If you have questions about this please call and speak to Margaret Burgess, 492-2434. Fred asked for a list of the microfiche collections at CU Boulder's Government Publications Library. Tim is planning a union list of the major government microfiche collections. Dept. of Commerce seminar: Tim spoke at the Department of Commerce Symposium on Partnership Opportunities on behalf of the federal depository library system. Speakers included staff from NOAA, NIST, and US West. Tim explained that the purpose of this seminar was to introduce the small business community to an National Information Infrastructure (NII) partnership. Colorado does not have the infrastructure for the NII. The lieutenant governor stated the need to wire the entire state and urged the business community to write their congressmen/women to get this done. CommerceNet is based in San Francisco and works in partnership with the Department of Commerce. Commerce wants to move to doing all government procurement via the Internet. For example people who would put their catalogs on CommerceNet would pay but you wouldn't have to pay to access this information. Tim likened libraries as the taxicabs or driver's education component to the onramp of the information super highway. New Business Louise announced that Auraria now has an open periodicals reading room. This is an experiment to see what happens. They moved their government publications collection. The push is to pull things into a central area. Mark announced that UNC got their reference room back after having new carpet installed. Rob and Tim will collaborate on an electronic discard list. Fred announced that CSU is going through a restructuring plan called "Positioning for the future." Every position in their library is being looked at. Documents as a group will be moved into a new area and the old public services will disappear (in name only). This project will look at mainstreaming the tech services function. This project will take some time but Fred will keep GoPig posted. Laura announced that this was her last meeting and stated that she had enjoyed working with everyone over the years. She's making a career change to enter the counseling profession. She's witnessed a lot of changes in fifteen years and has observed the emergence of the electronic format. Tim announced that CU is still awaiting its LAN. Ethernet wiring will begin soon. CU recently purchased 8 collections of the National Security Archive microfiche collection and the CD-ROM index. They also have the RFE/RL (Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty) microfiche collection. This is a very detailed collection but information about Eastern Europe is difficult to access. Tim prepared a guide to the collection which other GoPig members expressed interest in. CU has signed a contract with III (Innovative Interfaces Inc.) and the new system will be implemented over the Christmas holidays. Tour: Fred demonstrated NTIS' World Wide Webb connection. It looks fun and fantastic. The meeting adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Debbie Hollis
