Government Publications Interest Group (GoPig) meeting @ CU Business Library, May 17, 1995 Present: Janet Lee - Regis; Rob Jackson - DPL; Fred Schmidt - CSU; Marit MacArthur - Auraria; Tim Byrne, Debbie Hollis, Martha Jo Sani - CU. Only a few braved the rainy weather to gather together. Next meeting: The University of Wyoming in Laramie will host the next GoPig meeting on June 14, 1995 at 10:30 a.m. Travel arrangements are forthcoming. The CU librarians will try to arrange transportation so that everyone can drive up together. GPO Access: As of Monday, May 15th both Regis and Auraria have two test terminals each in place. They are using a SWAIS set up. There is a problem with using the existing CARL terminals since these terminals are not able to handle the vt100 emulation. GPO Access does work well on a standard WYSE 60 terminal but not WYSE 50. It is too early to tell how the public will respond to GPO Access. Both Janet and Marit will keep the group posted. On behalf of Louise Treff, Janet asked for volunteers to relinquish their GPO Access passwords. If CARL is used as the selective housing site, a library can turn over its passwords thus making more ports available for the public to dial in and use GPO Access. DOE database: CARL does not yet have a Lynx browser thus making a gateway to the DOE database not possible at this time. Federal legislative update: Tim read an email message from Dan O'Mahoney (Brown University) that summarizes the bills currently working their way through Congress that deal with government information and GPO. Tim will post Dan's message to CoGoPub-L. Tim announced that Jim Williams, Dean of the CU Libraries has been named chair of the ARL Access to Government Information task force. This sparked a lively discussion of the future of "free" government information and the depository library system. As in the past, the topic of government CD-ROMs and Internet sites arose which led to Tim asking if the group was interested in turning future GoPig meetings into continuing education opportunities. Future meetings could involve sharing information, local handouts, etc. about a specific government CD-ROM/Internet site. Those present agreed that this would be very helpful. Tim said he will post a question on CoGoPub to find out what specific CDs people are interested in promoting or teaching others about. He also announced that CU would soon be designing a homepage of subject specific government sites. The group toured the CU Business Library and Martha Jo demonstrated the useful government databases on Lexis/Nexis. GPO Access Training: GPO representative Judy Russel came to Denver and Boulder at the end of April for a GPO Access training session. Tim reported that the morning session in Boulder did not go as smoothly as the afternoon session. But the demonstration was helpful to many Colorado documents librarians. A question was raised about the databases on GPO Access. For example, will the Congressional Record of the 103rd Congress continue to be available as time goes by? During her visit Judy mentioned that most likely the dated material will be removed and archived on a CD-ROM. CARL/MARCIVE: Louise Treff continues to work on her Marcive profile. Tim reported that he received approval to purchase a new Marcive tape which will include authority work. Fred noted that barcoding is *not* a smooth process. CLA Fall GODORT meeting: Tim reported that he received an email message from Julie Jones-Eddy regarding the fall meeting. She recommends offering a GPO Access session as outreach to the community. Tim suggested hosting a session entitled "Government Information Through CARL" in which GPO Access, ERIC, and the CO legislative database are demonstrated. It looks like the GODORT business meeting will be held Sunday, October 1st and CIS might sponsor a wine and cheese session. Colorado State publications: Debbie reported that she is compiling a list of state Internet sites and already posted three interesting sites on CoGoPub-L. She is a member of the subcommittee of the State & Local Documents Task Force that is trying to compile a list of useful state Internet resources. The group hopes to have a substantive list in time to present at the ALA Chicago meeting. She will keep the group posted as she gathers information. Arcview & ESRI: Tim reported that they made a presentation to CU a week or so ago. Since ESRI's office is in Boulder he recommended that GoPig consider touring their facility for a future meeting. Perhaps a morning session at ESRI could include a demonstration of their government electronic products and a tour. The group will consider this idea after ALA. Old Business: Tim showed the group a copy of the "Country Commercial Guide" for Russia. He explained that this and other guides are available on the first disk of the NTDB. The Country Marketing Plans and Foreign Economic Trends are slowly being phased out. The Commercial guides seem to be an extensive combination of the two. Thus far ninety-five countries have commercial guides available while the country marketing plans are down to fifty. New Business: Debbie reported that she recently presented a paper at the 5th Conference for Librarians in International Development in Kansas City, Missouri. This group is an interesting blend of corporate, law, and academic librarians who share an interest in the issue of information and technology transfer in developing countries. The emphasis is on international issues of librarianship. She and Yolanda Maloney, a CU Business Librarian who also presented a paper at the conference, were asked if CU Boulder would consider co-hosting the 1997 conference with the Emporia State University School of Library & Information Management (SLIM) program. Debbie and Yolanda have met with the head of public services and administrative services and thus far it looks like there is interest. The two are scheduled to meet with the Dean of the University Libraries to discuss the details and opportunities that hosting a national conference would bring to the Boulder campus. Debbie said that if this is a go she hopes GoPig members will consider participating in the conference. Janet made a motion that GoPig endorse the idea of CU hosting this conference and Rob seconded the motion. Announcements: Fred updated the group on the events at CSU. The long awaited construction project has officially begun for the expansion of the library. CSU has also streamlined its technical services process and now government documents will be put into the regular work flow. In order to prominently locate documents reference service the staff has been combined and moved to the science reference desk. No other announcements were made. The group adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Debbie Hollis
