July 20, 1995 GoPig meeting @UNC, Greeley Present: Fred Schmidt, Suzanne Taylor, Lou Anderson - CSU, Lisa Stomberg, Chris Thiery - CO School of Mines, Marit MacArthur, Louise Treff - Auraria, Mark Anderson, Teresa Solars, Shirley Soenkson - UNC, Rob Jackson - DPL, Peggy Jobe, Tim Byrne, and Debbie Hollis - CU Boulder. Announcements: Everyone introduced themselves to Christopher Thiery, the new map librarian at the Colorado School of Mines. Next meeting: The next GoPig meeting will be held Thursday, August 17, 1995 at the Colorado School of Mines at 10 a.m. Tim will speak to the folks at ESRI to invite them to the meeting. ESRI offered to come and give a presentation and demonstrate ArcView. ALA update: Tim and Louise updated the group on GODORT events at the annual meeting of the American Library Association (ALA) that was recently held in Chicago. One of the main topics was the proposed reorganization of ALA. Round tables and GODORT (Government Documents Round Table) in particular didn't seem to fit into the current proposal. Roundtables were also not asked for input prior to the current proposal under consideration. A representative of the ALA Reorganization Committee was invited to the GODORT meeting and quickly educated about the group's activities. Louise told GoPig members that Susan Tullis posted a good summary of ALA on Govdoc-L. Wayne Kelley, the current Superintendent of Documents gave an optimistic report in view of the proposed budget cuts. New web sites were demonstrated. Depository shipping list numbering will change. Louise circulated copies of the GPO Cataloging Branch and Depository Services updates. She also shared a copy of the draft proposal of the ALA restructuring. It was noted that GPO is not getting credit for GPO Access in the same way that LOC is for the new THOMAS system. Tim noted that we can do our part by changing the CARL screen so that GPO is acknowledged. Lisa and Louise mentioned the new CARL press release concerning GPO Access availability. Tim recommended checking with GPO and Judy Russell about sending a press release to the Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News. United Nations: Peggy updated the group on UN activities. They are moving more to electronic distribution of their publications. She explained that it is possible to conduct a WAIS search of all UN documents from 1992 to the present. She will forward the UN web site address to CoGoPub-L along with instructions on how to search it effectively. It is now easier to identify resolutions and June 1995 resolutions are already available via the Internet. Web site demonstrations: Peggy demonstrated the UN site. Louise demonstrated the Superintendent of Documents Home Page. Tim demonstrated the Census Home Page and mentioned that it is also a good source of international statistics. Tim also demonstrated STAT-USA. Marcive records and maintenance: Mark wanted to discuss the issue of staff time and records maintenance. How are others handling this? Fred reported that CSU is mainstreaming their technical services and Documents recently transferred their staff person responsible for database maintenance to the central unit. Tim reported that CU Boulder will do the maintenance in their department. Tim mentioned that at the Marcive update at ALA it was reported that a backfile of shipping lists is available to those who subscribe to shipping list records and want to fill the cataloging gap or wish to have an online shelflist. CARL gossip: Louise distributed copies of the press release for GPO Access. Lisa reported that CARL the Alliance received the object code from CARL, Corp. The Colorado School of Mines hopes to have a test database by August. CEDIS update: Debbie distributed copies of the Colorado Economic Development Information System (CEDIS) brochure that she received from Becky Picaso. Free subscriptions to this electronic bulletin board are not available to depository libraries and state data centers. Two flat subscription rates are available. It looks like the $150 annual fee with unlimited search capabilities will work best for libraries. CU Boulder will subscribe to the service. The group asked Debbie to follow up with Becky regarding the availability of CEDIS on the Colorado Home Page. It could be password accessible. She will contact Becky and keep the group posted. Old Business: None. New Business: Lisa attended the TRI (Toxic Release Inventory CD-ROM) workshop. She stated that GoPIG is invited to have a meeting at the EPA office in Denver. No one seems to have received their newest TRI CD yet. Louise will contact George at CARL regarding the acknowledgement of GPO Access on the opening screen. Library significant events: Lou Anderson reported that she is responsible for Colorado state publications at CSU. She is working on a proposal to the CSU administration regarding the Colorado StateLinc materials. Lou requested any suggestions of how others are displaying/managing these items via the CoGoPub-L listserve. Louise asked Lou to update the group about how she decides to organize this. Fred reported that the CARL Alliance programmer will take the Colorado database and match CSU records prior to migrating to the new III system. There are big holes in the ground in front of the CSU library -- the construction project is underway. Moving the Documents reference desk to the former Science reference area has really helped increase their visibility. Peggy reported that she has begun work on the Government Publications Library Home Page. The department offered GPO Access training inhouse and thus far twenty people have expressed interest. After the inhouse workshop, they plan on offering this to the rest of the CU Boulder campus and Boulder city officials. Rob reported that he's experiencing frustration with the systems staff at DPL. They do not have GPO Access up and running yet. He reported on the state of the documents in the sub-basement. Several thousand got wet in the various floods that they experienced but the loss was only one hundred volumes. Thanks to the dry climate they did not experience mold. By October DPL plans to have the entire documents collection vacuumed and cleaned prior to moving it upstairs. They think that the entire collection will be out in the public area. Rob's not sure about this yet. Janet reported that Regis will have a reference position open next July. She just guest edited an issue of Colorado Libraries (Winter 1994). Janet recommends reading the article by CU Law librarian Georgia Briskol about migrating to a new online system. Lisa reported that the library at the Colorado School of Mines is experiencing construction. They are redoing the bathrooms and installing a new ADA elevator. She will update everyone about parking on campus prior to the August meeting. Mark reported that UNC finished their Marcive profiling. The meeting adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Debbie Hollis
