We toured Michener's newly reorganized Government Documents Department. 2. Louise reported on the ALA summer conference: GPO Funding - 1.5 m cut from the FY98 appropriations request by the Senate Appropriations Commitee, but GPO people seemed satisfied. The transfer of Government Information to private publishers - the Joint Committee on Printing was concerned about the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, and the the fugitive document problem in general. 50% of all documents don't make it into the DLP. Duncan Aldridge wrote the collection management plan for GPO Access. North American Industrial Code System - the Census Bureau will use 6 digit NAICS codes for the '97 Economic Censuses (see the April 9th, 1997 FR for more details). Gil Baldwin is working on standards for electronic information. No one has received any DOE Reports since last October. ERIC Microfiche will cease after FY 1998 and only be available electronically. Core Documents of Democracy - GPO is soliciting suggestions for what should be included. As of April there had been 4.5 million retrievals from GPO Access. GILS update - more comprehensive searching of all GILS sites will be possible. Congressional Hearings will be available on GPO Access. NTIS -last 10 years are available from FedWorld. There was a demonstration of GPO Access with sgml language - tag searching. Title 44 revisions: Hearings have been held on legislation that would substantially change Title 44. The major features of the bill are: GPO would become an independent executive branch agency and the Superintendent of Documents SOD would be a presidential appointee. So far, nothing has been introduced into either house. DIALOG@CARL -the state pilot project was discussed, and a list of Government databases that are included in DIALOG, was distributed. CU is writing a grant proposal to fund a retrospective cataloging of state documents project. Deb Hollis reported on the CLA GODORT election. Mark Anderson, who nominated himself and ran unopposed, was elected Vice-chair; chair-elect for 97-98. European Union Celex Database - CU has a CD-ROM version of the Celex database which greatly simplifies finding info from the European Union.
