Minutes from GoPig Meeting (6/11/99) Colorado School of Mines Present: Susan Simmons (Broomfield PL), Sharon Partridge (JCPL), Monica Davis (Colorado College), Louise Treff-Gangler (Auraria), Rob Jackson (DPL), Chris Brown (DU), Fred Schmidt (CSU), Tim Byrne (CU Boulder), Lisa Nickum (CSM) 1. Tour of CSM's Government Publications and Map sections. Included was a demonstration of the NTIS Pilot Project of which CSM and CU Boulder are participants. 2. Announcements - Lisa Nickum asked for another volunteer to take over writing the minutes for the GoPig meetings. 3. No changes were made to the minutes from the 4/30/99 GoPig meeting. 4. Meeting places and dates for the remainder of 1999. July 30 - UNC Sept. 10 - Broomfield Oct. 29 - JCPL Dec. 3 - CSU 5. Equipment Issues - While some libraries did not have any problems with providing access from Internet workstations, others had discovered users had made changes to the hard drive. Security software programs, such as WinSelect and I Kiosk, were mentioned as possible solutions to these problems, but nobody had direct experience with these two programs. The problem of non-Y2K compliant CD-ROMs was discussed. At this point, nobody knew of any CD-ROM titles other that the NTDB that were non-compliant. The GODORT committee GITCO (Government Information Technology Committee) has expressed interested in creating a list of those depository CD-ROMs that are non-compliant. The group also talked about DVD, ZIP, and Jazz drives. Some libraries are currently providing access to DVD and ZIP drives. Jazz drives have the ability to store 2 gigs per disk (as opposed to 100 MB for ZIP disks) and might be added to the public workstations at CU Boulder. Also CU Boulder will be moving to a NT network. 7. World News Connection - Tim Byrne is thinking of asking BCR to look into consortium pricing for the NTIS product World News Connection (this is the Internet database that provides access to FBIS information). Currently the pricing is steep at $2,500 for one simultaneous user and $6,000 for 2-5 simultaneous users. CU Boulder currently has individual passwords. These passwords cost less money, but the librarians at CU Boulder believe that the mediation required for the passwords to be entered deters use. 8. CORC (Cooperative Online Resource Catalog) - A meeting for this OCLC pilot project was held at UNC at the end of March. The catalog being created contains records for online resources. The records may be entered in MARC or Dublin Core formats. The Dublin Core is a format that was created with selected fields to make cataloging quicker and easier. A large part of this database are GPO records created for government online resources. In addition to the catalog records for online resources, one can also create subject bibliographies for online resources within this catalog. While the catalog records cannot currently be exported to a library's local database, the Pathfinders (subject bibliographies) can be exported and personalized for the library. GPO and the GODORT Cataloging Committee are currently monitoring this project. 9. Open File Reports - The Colorado School of Mines Library received a U.S. Geological Survey printout of all of the USGS Open File Reports. This paper report is large (about 8.5 inches) and covers open file reports from 1916 to the present. The CSM staff were interested in putting the contents of this report on a web page, but the USGS staff are planning to go through the report to make sure it is correct and then putting it up on a USGS web page. It is estimated that this could be accomplished by the end of 1999 or the beginning of 2000. 10. Patent and Trademark - The group discussed the usefulness of the Patent and Trademark workshop held at DPL in May. The group questioned why PTO staff are not putting as much effort into their web site as they are the CD-ROMs. 11. Unfinished business - Since Title 44 legislation failed during the 105th Congress, the IAWG and the ALA Washington staff are working on a much smaller bill covering only Chapter 41 of Title 44 (dealing only with electronic government information product). A draft is available on the GODORT website (http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/GODORT/iawgpage.html). The ALA Washington office staff will begin talking with congressional staff to see if they can get sponsor(s). 12. No new business 13. Library significant events CSU - Working of the retroconversion of the USGS Water Supply Papers (I 19.13:). They have reduced their selection rates to 76%. They received a large gift of maps from a donor. DPL - A new computer for the patent collection will be installed to be able to search the new DVD CD-ROMs. Auraria - The older government material will be barcoded or cataloged during the summer. A new AD has been approved by the Board of Regents. Colorado College - Carol Dickerson has accepted the position as Director of CC and will start in mid-August. Julie Jones-Eddy, who had taken over as acting director during the search, will return to the Documents Dept. (part-time in July and full-time in August). CC is examining the item numbers selected between 1976 -1993 and filling in gaps. They are also starting a project to fill in gaps in their topographic map collection. Finally, when Julie returns, they will be redoing their web page. JCPL - They are continuing with their unsuppression of the MARCIVE records and are at the NASA paper documents. They will soon start the Ys and the microfiche collection. They have a separate database for records covering local documents (such as DRCOG, Jefferson County, Lakewood, Rocky Mountain Arsenal, and Lockheed Martin) that is not Y2K compliant. They will probably transfer the contents of this database to a Microsoft product. Broomfield - A draft building plans will be created with the consultant for the new library. The documents department is thinking about separating the documents from the regular collection. The group discussed the pros and cons. Tim Byrne reminded the group that GPO does not require or push for a separate collection. CU - The government publications reference area has been remodeled so the reference librarians are visible. The recarpeting will happen soon followed by the installation of new computers. CSM - Approval was granted for a temporary position and software needed to work on checking and modifying government publication catalog records with Internet addresses. This position will also include working with the government publication serial records. Marilyn Stark will be working in the Reference section during the summer as a replacement for Gita Passfield who is ill.
