GoPig Minutes from 7/30/99 University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, Colorado Present: Debbie Hollis (CUB), McKinley Sielaff (UW), Chris Brown (DU), Susan Simmons (Broomfield PL), Sharon Partridge (JCPL), Louise Treff-Gangler (Auraria), Mark Anderson (UNC), Lisa Nickum (CSM) 1. Broncos practice (Terrell Davis really hit the weights during the offseason!) 2. Announcements - Announcements for Rob Richards (CU Law) made by Debbie Hollis in Rob's absence - successfully completed the item selection update for CU Law; attended a AALL meeting where Fran Buckley spoke about the GPO keeping permanent titles in the sales program, the aftermath of the NIH audit which has resulted in better communication between NIH and GPO, and GPOs concern about the new database legislation. Tim Byrne could not attend so Debbie Hollis chaired this meeting. 3. Minutes - Minutes from the June 11 meeting were distributed. Lisa Nickum will continue to take minutes for the July meeting, but will then "pass the torch" to the next person during the Sept. meeting. Sharon Partridge volunteered to take minutes starting in about a year. Any volunteers for this year? 4. Next meeting place and date Broomfield PL - September 10 October 29 - Jefferson County Public Library, Lakewood Branch December 3 - Colorado State University 5. ALA Conference Report - There were 2 GODORT programs that were approved for the Chicago Conference summer 2000. One is coming out of the International Documents Task Force and will cover international statistics sources. The other program arranged by the State and Local Documents Task Force. It will concern state and local partnerships for state and local information. There will be 3-4 panelists with our own Debbie Hollis acting as moderator. Also our own Peggy Jobe will be on the panel talking about federal products that contain state and local information. As past coordinator of the State and Local Documents Task Force, Debbie is also working on a meeting that is being partially funded by an anonymous source. This meeting is to bring together those who coordinate the distribution of state documents so they can share their ideas. This initial meeting would include those east of the Mississippi. This meeting will be held in the Hartford, Conn. If it is successful, there might be a similar meeting for the western half of the country. The program for this meeting focussed on the merging of public services and technical services happening in many depository libraries. There were 6-8 people on the panel, most of whom had merged their services. One member of the panel had rescinded the merge, but the rest had stayed merged and talked about their successes. Those who had attended this program from the GoPig group felt like these merges had happened for financial reasons, and the panel members were trying to do the best they could within the structure they were given. After discussing the "to merge or not to merge" issue, the majority of the GoPig group felt as though the overall service by "unmerged" libraries was probably provided at a higher level than those that had merged. Other notes from the conference were - the GODORT Policy and Procedure Manual is available on the GODORT webpage - GPO is no longer printing Background Notes and they are only available online - GPO received no increases in funding - GPO is working on searching across databases in the GPO Access site; this new feature should be available soon 6. CLA Reorganization - Mark Anderson reported on a CLA meeting he attended where the reorganization of the association was the topic. CLA is looking at forming a federation with CEMA (Colorado Education Media Association). This federation will apparently be discussed at the October meeting. Both CLA and CEMA boards have to approve the proposal. The reorganization of CLA has been put on hold until the creation of the federation has been decided. 7. CLA Conference - GODORT Program - The program will be on the 2000 Census and the 1997 Economic Census with Jerry O'Donnell as the main speaker. The group discussed the best time to have the program. Volunteers are being sought to do quick presentations on how their libraries deal with Census material to fill out the GODORT program. Mark Anderson also talked about a CLA panel discussion he is involved in on business resources. 8. Colorado Document Cataloging - CU Boulder has been having problems in getting records for Colorado state publications. They are noticing many duplicates. 9. CEDIS - Debbie Hollis reported an increase in use of the CEDIS (Colorado Economic and Demographic Information System) database. Because this is difficult to access, she called the Division of Local Government to see if they were thinking about offering this via the Internet. She was surprised that they are hoping to unveil this system on the Internet by January 2000. 10. Statistical Universe - There was interest in having the Alliance negotiate for the state and internation sections of the Statistical Universe package since this was not done initially. 11. Unfinished business - Because the impact of Y2K was brought up at the previous meeting, Lisa Nickum contacted the chair of the GODORT Government Information Technology Committee (GITCO) to see if they were working on Y2K issues with depository CD-ROMs. They are working on the CD-ROM Documentation Project and are not planning on tackling the Y2K issue with CD-ROMs. Respectfully submitted, ******************************************************************* Lisa S.
