    A gateway to international environmental law. "Users can search using subject area, keyword, country, or date. The list of subjects includes, for example: climate/atmosphere; fresh water; marine environment; soils; forests; biodiversity; energy; protected areas; hazardous substances; and wastes. ECOLEX includes information on multilateral treaties; national legislation; European Union instruments; international "soft law" and related documents; law and policy literature; and judicial decisions."

    • State of the Environment Reporting Information System (SERIS)
      SERIS is an inventory of national state of the environment reports. The database contains brief publications details for recent (1997 onwards) reports for countries included in the EEA's third assessment report. SERIS contains links to the reports and to the main organisation involved in the report. Reports can be identified by their geographic coverage or the year of publication. National and multi-national reports are included in the database.

      The complete report includes global overview, regional status and trends, regional policy responses, forecasts for the environmental future of the earth in the absence of significant change, and summaries of actions which should be taken to alleviate environmental degradation.

      This centre provides extensive information on all aspects of conservation, including habitats, regions, protected areas, climate change and individual species.

Nongovernmental Sources

  • Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN)
    CIESIN is "dedicated to furthering the interdisciplinary study of global environmental change." The CIESIN site features population data, environmental treaties and "thematic guides" on topics such as agriculture, human health, land use, ozone depletion, political institutions, remote sensing, and other topics. Each of the thematic guides is a small hypertext library on the topic, integrating synthesis of current research with full text of articles appearing in scientific journals which have granted permission to publish electronic versions of print articles. CIESIN also offers interactive data retrieval and mapping.

From the New Zealand Digital Library, a site with several important collections of digital materials from intergovernmental and international organizations.
  • World Resources Institute
    This institute provides the complete texts of over 300 reports, papers, and books on environmental issues.
    • EarthTrends: Environment Information
      This site provides a wide array of environmental data and information. The material is grouped into broad topics: coastal and marine ecosystems; water resources and freshwater ecosystems; climate and atmosphere; population, health and human well-being; economics, business and the environment; energy and resources; biodiversity and protected areas; agriculture and food; forests and grasslands; and environmental institutions and governance. After selecting a broad topic, the user has access to databases, data tables, country profiles, maps, and feature articles.
