1997: 2-26 | 4-21 | 6-16 | 7-21 | 8-17 | 10-20 | 11-17 | 12-17

July 21, 1997

Present: Jim Williams, Nancy Emery, Barbara Greenman, Curt Williams, Suzanne Genz, Carol Jacobson

Absent: Skip Hamilton, Wendy Baia, Barbara McMynn

Chair: Nancy Emery
Recorder: Carol Jacobson

I.

a. Women's first-floor bathroom. We have had a request that the paint be scraped off the window since it is frosted and does not need to be painted. Also, the wall behind the sinks is crumbling and the baseboards are falling off. The hallway is dark and there is a gross-looking bag of something hanging from the overhead piping.

b. The hallway outside Tech Services is poorly lit.

ACTION: Nancy will speak with Dan Davidson about getting a work order to have the paint scraped off the window and investigate repairing the crumbling wall. She will also question Dan as to how we can improve the lighting in these dark hallways.

II. Signs: Concern was expressed regarding the status of the signs.

a. Permanent signs. There have been problems with finding a reliable vendor and the recommendations for ordering and purchasing seem to get stuck in the many channels they must go through.
b. Stacks guide cards. We have a standard to go by for the signs in the stacks.
c. Norlin banner is in the ordering stage. Hasn't yet been ordered.
d. There is a department in Facilities Management run by Andy Sleeper which makes signs.

ACTION: Nancy will contact John Dziadecki (sign committee chair), Scott Seaman and Dan Davidson (the building proctor) to set up a meeting to discuss the status of ordering the signs and suggest that they explore the possibility of getting our signs from the facman sign shop. Jim will talk to Scott about the standards for the stacks signs, card stock and software available which can be used by all branches for creating their signs.

Nancy will make sure the Norlin Banner gets ordered and will follow up on it to see that it is scheduled to arrive on time.

III. University Libraries Report

It has come to the attention of the LAB that there have been complaints about edits to submitted material without the author's knowledge.

ACTION: Jim has instructed us to reiterate in the minutes a portion or the ULR policy statement: "The editor decides what is appropriate and edits for clarity and brevity. The editor should be notified immediately regarding any corrections, which will be printed in the next issue. At the time of submission, article authors may request to review their piece if it is substantively edited (i.e. beyond grammatical, syntactical, spelling, or punctuation changes). However, this may cause a delay in publication."

Jim will contact Deborah Fink to see if they have considered that publishing once a month may be enough since we are able to get much of our news via e-mail. We agreed that we particularly enjoy the Personnel News, Positions Open, Who's on Leave and Kudos! sections as well as articles such as Gloria de Alfaro's "Trip to Rockville" in the July 15, 1997 edition.

The LAB requests that when e-mail messages are printed verbatim, permissiom is obtained from the author beforehand.

IV. First Aid Kits

Kits are available from Environmental Health and Safety for $28 each with free refills. Jim said the funds for obtaining the kits will come from the Libraries supply & equipment budget and refills will be the responsibility of department heads.

ACTION: Barbara McMynn will contact departments to inquire as to how many the Libraries should order and report to Scott how many have been requested for budgetary purposes.

V. LAB web page developments:

a. Should include our charge, list our members, minutes, and mailbox.
b. Should also link to Dean's page under "committees".

ACTION:

The Dean's office will establish an archive link and our minutes will be part of that archive. Nancy will talk to John about a charge to the WIG committee and discuss setting up a LAB e-mail address.

VI. Coffee Machine in the staff lounge. Results of the survey were not sufficiently compelling to warrant further investigation in this direction. 22 people responded that they would use the machine and 13 said that they would not.

ACTION: Dropped the discussion of the coffee machine.

Jim will talk to Scott about allowing people to bring in covered, reusable beverage containers to the public reading rooms. This would include only beverage containers such as the Baby Doe's cups and would not include food.

VII. Double doors to Technical Services should remain closed for security reasons. With deliveries and people traveling in and out, the doors are frequently left open.

ACTION: We are reminding everyone to close the door behind them and to close it if you see it standing open. Nancy will make and put up a sign to remind people to keep the door closed.
