I. New Members
II. Committees and Staff Time: there has been some rumbling in various departments about the amount of time some staff members spend on committee work
ACTION: Committee work is valued and necessary work. Staff members should, however, be sure to discuss potential conflicts with supervisors before accepting positions on committees.
III. West planters: are being used as ashtrays again. Can they be covered in the winter to prevent such unsightliness?
ACTION: FacMan has been questioned about covers, but we do not have a response. It is not possible to get more ashtrays per University ashtray standards.
IV. The end of OCI
A. Will there be a new study conducted?ACTION: Yes, as part of the program review in the Summer of 1999.
B. There is a concern that goals have not been reached. Although the committee attempted to correct problems, the problems still exist or are still perceived to exist. Is there any way to measure improvement?
C. Of particular concern is the issue of sub-par supervision
- 1. Is supervision included in the job description?
- 2. What consequences occur if a person is found to be a poor supervisor?
- 3. Is there a plan to address known management problems?
D. LAB recommends mandatory supervision class for ALL supervisors
ACTION: The OCI is working on creating a database of supervisors and the courses they have taken. Supervisors will be held responsible for coursework and there is a supervisory component to their evaluations. More information on supervisory evaluations will be forthcoming from OCI.
V. Johann
A. Fire and emergency safety--letter forwarded to Fac/Staff development committee -- LAB recommends some distribution of information to interested individuals, perhaps through departmental safety reviews.ACTION: Jim Manzanares is the contact person for safety issues. Departments wishing a safety review should contact him.
B. Shelving during high return times--call for volunteers -- LAB recommends that any branch or department needing extra help appeal to the Norlin List
ACTION: Such appeals have happened and the worst of the problem was alleviated.
C. Stolen lunches from lounge--request for lock -- LAB is unsure how widespread this problem is and if the person wants a lock on the refrigerator or the lounge as a whole -- LAB recommends individual lunch coolers or possibly a combination lock on the refrigerator
ACTION: If stolen lunches are a wide spread problem, please contact an LAB member so we can revisit this issue.
D. Christmas party--scheduling and food distribution --Complaints that the party was held before finals and too early in the day. Complaints also that savory foods ran out, leaving only sweets.
- Forwarded to Social Functions.
- LAB recommends scheduling party for after finals (when the rush is over) and slightly later in the day, say 3-5.
ACTION: The LAB would like to thank the Social Functions Committee for all their work in creating a lovely party. The Social Functions Committee is aware of the scheduling problems and will keep these issues in mind.
VI: LAB would like to thank Karla Schorzman for taking the time to clean the lounge microwaves. We encourage other faculty and staff who use the lounge appliances regularly to do the same.
