October 26, 2000 Present: Dean Jim Williams, Carl Stewart (acting chair), Carol Krismann, Greg Robl, David Fagerstrom, Naomi Heiser, Laura Wright. Next agenda-setting meeting will be Nov. 13. Next meeting with the Dean will be Nov. 20. Old business: 1. Will maker: Systems has been contacted to see if this is now available for faculty and staff use. 2. Cross Training Policy Carol Krismann provided information to help formulate a working definition of "cross training" in the absence of a state personnel definition. Our current working definition is: Cross-training is the process of being trained to do tasks outside one's job description. Cross-training can serve a variety of purposes, primary of which is to sustain and improve service quality. Also cross-training may help to better understand one's own job; to provide a back-up for other staff; to provide job variety (for instance for ergonomic reasons); to be able to fill-in if work-loads change; to expand the knowledge base of the organization and to foster a sense of community. Mark Augustin at Human Resources has been contacted for input on what State/University policy constraints there might exist on a Libraries' Cross-Training Policy. 3. Fall All-Libraries Meeting -This is scheduled for November 27 which is the Monday right after the Thanksgiving Holidays. LAB had considered not providing food, but only beverages so that perhaps more funds could be applied to the December Holiday Party. The proximity in time of the All-Libraries meeting to the New Employee Breakfast and the Holidays was also considered. It was decided however to continue the tradition of serving pastries, fruit and beverages at the All-Libraries meeting. LAB will set up the meeting space and take it down, record summary minutes and survey Norlin list on how the meeting went. Sharon Gause will MC the meeting. 4. Norlin-List will be one topic of discussion at the All-Libraries meeting. LAB considered a proposal that a second unmoderated voluntary list serve be established for posting of email that is not directly Libraries related. Another suggestion was made to instead request a standard subject header for email posted to Norlin List that is not directly related to the Libraries. (Outlook has the capability to automatically delete messages with standard header information.) LAB members will review State and University policies related to these proposals and consult with John Culshaw of Systems before presenting a proposal to the All-Libraries meeting. 5. Johann Suggestion Box query about Email Etiquette. Response has been posted to Norlin list which was also printed in ULR. ULR is considering reprinting one of the articles cited. 6. Johann Suggestion Box query about Welcome Banner. Sharon is investigating delegation of this responsibility from LAB. 7. Johann Suggestion Box query about available counseling. Laura Wright will post LAB response after having it reviewed by Administrative Services and Counseling. New Business: 8. Johann Suggestion Box query about Norlin interior signage. This will be referred to Scott Seaman in Admin Services. 9. There was some discussion of the need for more public computer workstations in Science and the status of the rewiring of that part of the building. 10. Instructional computer labs are being investigated for E-303 and in the basement where SASI vacated. 11. Housing Department's arrangements, now being used in the dorms, for pay-for-printing was described. |
