May 21, 2001 Present: Jim Williams, Greg Robl (chair), Sue Williams, Martha Jo Sani, David Fagerstrom, Laura Wright (acting secretary) Next Meeting: Sept. 10, 2001
Awards ceremony: Thanks to Greg for the vignettes. Mixed response to location: for next year, we might want to suggest Social Functions Committee look into the Faculty Club and the UMC (post remodeling) as possible sites. If you received a length of service award and were not at the ceremony, please contact Shelley Joy about picking up your gift certificate. Fall All Libraries Meeting: Mary Jane is working on a date for this meeting (tentatively October 26?). Caffeine for circulation desk students during finals week: Note received in Johann Suggestion Box: "COFFEE! Students at circ desk need caffeine!" LAB will forward this to Brice and suggest he let students know they are welcome to bring in a coffee maker. (Noted problems with beverages and danger of electrical appliances being left on but most departments do have coffee makers.) Emergency evacuations, signage, etc.: Reported from Cataloging Dept. Meeting - concerns expressed about signage, lack of drills, blocked NW emergency exit, and clarity of policy for handicapped (both staff and patrons). Scott Seaman has met with the Fire Marshall and signs are being redone. A presentation about emergency procedures is in the works. Jim will also talk to Scott about instituting regular (semesterly?) training sessions in emergency procedures for Libraries and Security students. This will need to be corrdinated with Ric Johnson (Security) and the Student Supervisors Group. In addition, Rick Johnson will be scheduled to go to Department Heads meetings to introduce himself. Norlin Welcome Banner: Since documentation of objections cannot be located, we assume that this can go forward. Greg will talk to Cathie Holzer about locating the banner and requesting that FacMan install it the week before classes start through the first week of the semester. Bobbie Barrow of the University Communications Office should also be notified. OCI: No news. Scott apparently has still not heard anything from Mark Augustin. Cross-training: The cross-training policy and forms are now official and available online in the Administrative Policy Manual. See http://ucblibraries.colorado.edu/as/manual/admin/crosstrainingpolicy.htm These are also available from Administrative Services. LAB would like to encourage libraries staff to pursue cross-training, and department heads to look for cross-training opportunities. FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions): Cabinet has reviewed the FAQ and it has just been made public. See http://ucblibraries.colorado.edu/internal/lab/faq.htm Summary of LAB Accomplishments from 2000: This has been sent to the list. In future, this sort of summary should be presented at least once a year at the All Libraries Meeting. Please refer any questions about this list to any members of the LAB. Willmaker: LAB erroneously believed that this had been installed in Engineering. Apparently they are still waiting for Systems to install it. Please note however that it is already available to all staff on a laptop which can be checked out from Administrative Services. Energy Conservation Resolution: LAB received a request from the UCSU Environmental Board to support an Energy Conservation Resolution. This is a very broad resolution addressing campus-wide policies (such as lighting) over which the Dean has no authority. (The Dean's role is to comply with campus policy.) While the LAB lauds the intentions of the resolution, our official support would be meaningless, as the issues addressed are much larger than the Libraries. So, Greg will contact the sender of the resolution and suggest it be taken to Ron Stump, the Associate Chancellor for Student Affairs, who could then take it to the Chancellor's Executive Committee. Length of Service/Retirement Celebrations: Jim requested that the LAB reconsider the length of time an employee needs to have worked in the Libraries in order to qualify for an official recognition (i.e. party) upon retirement. All present agreed that the current 20 years is too long. Five years (including any time spent working as a student, a temporary employee, or a volunteer) was suggested instead. LAB members unanimously approved five years in a vote following the meeting. Helping Hands: The question arose - who oversees Helping Hands? While discussion about this group began in LAB, it was formed by LSA, and is run by volunteers. The "Bin" (issues to be monitored and revisited later):
