Present: Dean Jim Williams, Susan Anthes, Suzanne Larsen, Laura Wright (chair), Helene McHendry, Lorna Kent, Maureen Van Camp, Paul Moeller (secretary)

[1] The Staff Lounge Policy and the LAB FAQs have been posted in the staff lounge. The suggestion box will be relabeled in order to show it is clearly the Library Advisory Board suggestion box. In the future most staff lounge related questions will be forwarded to the building proctor.

[2] The Dean decided that given the current budget situation the request for a phone in the staff lounge would be denied.

[3] LAB received the following question through the suggestion box:

"There seems to be an opportunity for working in public service units in Branch libraries and some are wondering how the people working in Math Physics and Business received those assignments: Were these people appointed by the Dean? Were they chosen by an application process? Does the Department Head have a vote in who can manage their library? Are there other forthcoming opportunities? If so, where are they?"

LAB's response:

All employees of the University Libraries are both chosen by an application process and appointed by the Dean (the appointing authority for the Libraries). Procedures for both new hires and transfers differ for faculty and classified staff, and some assignments may also be filled on a temporary basis.

Faculty positions are usually chosen through a national or an internal search. Interim positions are often filled locally.

Staff hiring practices are governed by the rules and regulations of the State personnel system. All staff personnel changes must go through all proper channels, including the personnel offices, for approval.

Department Heads do have a voice in all decisions and personnel issues that affect their department. Any questions about specific positions or opportunities may be directed to Scott Seaman (Associate Director of Administrative Services).

In addition, anyone interested in possible transfer/promotion opportunities should identify positions that might be appropriate and inquire about them. Cross-training is an excellent way to develop additional skills that might help personnel look more attractive to other departments or branches. More information about cross-training in the libraries is available on the Administrative Services website:

[4] The All Library Meeting will take place on April 11 in the Center for British Studies.

[5] We will review the charge of the LAB during the March 11 meeting. The charge is available at

[6] Next meeting: March 11

[7] LAB welcomes your comments and suggestions. Please feel free to contact any of its members individually or to leave a note in the suggestion box.
