| September 15, 2003 Present: Jim Williams, Paul Moeller, Jane Zumwalt, Suzanne Larsen, Lorna Kent, Scott Seaman. Dean Williams discussed where we are on the budget noting that the real numbers are still not out. 160K has been provided for the Student Assistant budget. Norlin will be open 7 days a week except for listed holidays. Branches outside of Norlin will be closed on football Saturdays. All Libraries Meeting will be Monday November 17th at 9am with beverages available. A call for agenda items will be sent out in October. The long list of cost saving suggestions was the main agenda item. A cost savings suggestion received several times was to offer staff voluntary temporary reductions in appointment so that those funds could be used to provide ongoing funding for the staff positions that were eliminated. Unfortunately, given the regulations of the classified staff system, that is not possible. Funds realized from temporary reductions in appointment cannot be used to pay on-going salaries. Instead, volunteers would have to take permanent reductions in their appointments. While funds realized from temporary reductions can be used by the Libraries, they can only be used for one-time purchases such as for equipment, supplies, travel, or furniture. Environmental issues of the cost savings suggestions include things already being done such as putting the stickers on light switches to remind people to shut off the lights. Scott will address some of these suggestions at the All Libraries meeting. Work smarter suggestions included specific changes in work patterns of departments. At the All Libraries Meeting each unit will report cost savings measures that have been started. The inventory by BCR has been cut back but needs to continue in order to get access to all the materials we have. LAB thanks all those who sent in cost savings ideas. The ideas have been passed on to the directors. LAB welcomes your comments and suggestions. Please feel free to contact any of its members individually, to leave a note in the suggestion box, or to reach us via liblab@colorado.edu. Susan Anthes, Public Services |
