Helene McHendry attended the first portion of the meeting and reported on proposed revisions of the written Library Technician II exam [which could also be used as a prescreening written test for the LT III exam]. The exam taskforce was not charged to rewrite the oral questions of the LTIII exam; Larsen suggested that these need revision, also.

The revised LTII written exam will include 50 questions concerning Technical Services, Public Services, interpersonal relationships & a combination of these topics. In January the exam taskforce will ask for volunteers [among LTIIIs], to anonymously take & evaluate the LTII test. Larsen offered to participate in revisions of the LTII written & the LTIII oral exams. Dean Williams suggested that the charge of the exam taskforce could be changed, so that they could address the oral LTIII questions. Once approved by Human Resources, this exam will be available for use on the CU-Boulder campus; Kris Watson of HR would like to have it adopted statewide. Seaman & Dean Williams concluded that we can design our own campus-wide test, even if the test was not applicable statewide.

In response to a constituent’s request, additional soap dispensers have been installed in the women’s restroom on the 1st floor of Norlin.

As we discussed in November, the metal doors into the former-NUC room in Norlin still open with difficulty & close abruptly. Per Seaman, these doors do not qualify for a handicapped-accessible opener, as there are other routes available for use. Technical Services has asked that these doors remain closed to limit access by the public. However, for many users these doors remain the most direct access to certain parts of Norlin. Seaman will forward our request for repair of the doors, as the hydraulic-damper mechanism seems worn out.

The LAB email [liblab@colorado.edu] received a lengthy message late Saturday night, with many complaints about increases in student fees and about the reduction in Norlin hours from 3 a.m. to midnight closing during exam week. Larsen suggested that we limit our reply to the change in library hours & refer the sender’s other concerns to the Board of Regents. Dean Williams added that we could refer general complaints to the Office of Student Affairs & to the student government; he emphasized that any reductions in libraries’ hours resulted directly from budget constraints. Anthes has received only one other similar complaint about earlier closing during exams. For next semester Larsen suggested that we refer patrons to the UMC at closing time, if they are open later than the libraries.

Van Camp commented that the recent holiday party was much appreciated by staff & by student employees. The LAB especially wanted to thank Randy Key for musical entertainment, BreadWorks for the excellent food, and Laurie Sampsel & the faculty musicians who played at the party.

In response to earlier discussion about appropriate use of the email-list, the faculty-staff development committee will present a workshop on email filters. John Culshaw will also post the network use policy to the list & will provide a few examples of email practices to avoid [including partisan political emails that may violate the Fair Campaign Practices Act].

The next meeting [without Dean Williams] is tentatively scheduled for Mon., 12 Jan. 2004 at 10:00.
