Minutes: April 6, 2004
The first LAB sponsored All Libraries Meeting for 2004 convened on April 6. Major agenda items were:
1 - presentation by Dean of Top Drawer Society sculpture
2 - presentation of new Libraries' web page and logo
3 - Dean and cabinet members answers to staff/faculty questions
The meeting started at 10 O'clock in the Norlin Library east entrance lobby, where Dean Williams unveiled the First Drawer Society sculpture to library staff. The sculpture is made from the old card catalog, and was created by a local artist. The primary purpose of this sculpture is for fundraising. If a donor gives more than $10,000 to the University Libraries, their name will appear on the sculpture. The first two donors on the sculpture are Leo Cabell, former Associate Library Director, whose endowment funded the project and the Friends of the Library. The official presentation date for general public is in May.
The meeting then continued in N410 with approximately 70 staff and faculty attending.
The Dean presented the Libraries’ new logo and web page. The new logo is a simplified sundial, representing the stone one at the east entrance of Norlin. It is a memorial to a student from a major donor to the Libraries. It is the most accurate sundial on the globe, thanks to help from C.U. physics students and N.I.S.T., according to the dean. Dean Williams stressed that the concepts of time, timeliness, and "timelessness" or being independent of time are ones the Libraries wish to be associated with. Because of this, the sundial logo is appropriate.
Library's Web Advisory Committee (WAC) and PR and Public Relation Committee (PRC) worked together on the logo project. The logo and new library web page will be available after July 1, according to Becky Imamoto, chair of WAC.
LAB Chair Helene McHendry, presented four questions from library staff for Cabinet members to answer. The four questions were:
1 - Will the fines operations and Patron Accounts Office Be closing with the upcoming retirements in Circulation?
2 - Are we currently under a hiring freeze for classified staff?
3 - Could we have an update on the Norlin remodel?
4 - What is the state of the '04/'05 budget?
1 - Susan Anthes reported on the proposed changes in the Patron Accounts Office. There will be three retirements in Circulation. Because these positions are funded by fines, and fines are declining, the Libraries may not be able to fund these positions any longer. The draft plan is a new configuration of circulation policies. It is likely that staff and faculty will be charged for recalls, reserves overdue and lost books. Susan emphasized that plan is still in draft form and input is welcome.
2 - Responding to the question of whether there is a hiring freeze for classified
staff - Dean Williams said it was only a
slowing down of recruitment, until the details of Long Bill are clear. He said
the budget situation would be clear by
the end of the month.
3 - Norlin remodeling - Dean Williams stated that he and Scott Seaman had met with architects, and had a conceptual plan. A Power Point presentation on the plan will be scheduled in May. The plan includes students' request for a 24 hr. study facility, and relocation of some departments in Norlin. The east part of the building will be a 24 HOUR study facility, and relocation of some departments in Norlin. The east part of the building will be A DESTINATION AREA INCLUDING A 24 HOUR lab; the west part of the building will be PEOPLE SPACE. The plan is to create a “street” from the east entrance to the west. The Reference Dept. will be moved to The BAY WINDOW READING Room AREA. With only one central reference desk in the building.
4 - Responding to the question about ‘04-‘05 fiscal year budget, Dean William addressed following key issues:
- The state legislature is looking at the effects of cuts to Higher Education
budget. Issue of enterprise status, vouchers and various ramifications were
discussed. Dean Williams stated that the Legislature needs to think about
a constitutional amendment regarding TABOR. He said there is strong sentiment
to support the Long Bill, which as written, supports vouchers.
- The dean said that, although we are 65% of the way into fiscal year, we
have spent 90% of the equipment budget.
- University Libraries are a 16 million dollar a year institution. We spend
more than a million per month.
- He stressed that, despite library budget cuts, people on campus trust our
services, and that there is great support for our mission
- At this point, questions from the floor were called for:
- Issue of timeline for Norlin remodel was addressed. It is dependent on fundraising.
- There was discussion of the proposed facilities fee students will vote on later this month
