Minutes: January 2005
Library Advisory Board Minutes 1/24/05 10:00 a.m.
Present: K. Campbell, D. Fink, J. Gerke, H. McHendry, H. Schmidt, H. Wicht, C. Williams, J. Williams
New members were introduced to Dean Williams. Dean Williams reviewed role of LAB. He listed some of LAB’s past accomplishments. He stressed the importance of the work former LAB’s did with LSA and Staff Councils on Echo Passes and the creation of C.U. Recycling Center.
Role of LAB chairperson was also addressed by Dean.
1. It was reiterated that secretary duties would rotate among faculty and staff in alphabetical order
2. LAB meetings schedule will remain at 2nd and 3rd Mondays 10am-11:30 am
3. Discussion of staff’s lack of participation on committees was resumed from last
meeting. Deborah Fink prepared online survey dealing with this issue. McHendry will make corrections as suggested. Schmidt will sent out. McHendry will compile results.
question was raised whether survey should be sent to staff and faculty or staff only
decision made – will be sent to staff only staff will have option to answer online or by handing in paper form
4. Incentives to increase participation in Library-wide committees discussed
According to Dean, administrative leave cannot be used for this purpose, it would be considered a service, not work.
Some acceptable incentives might include: lunch of some kind, gift certificates, or possibly discounted ticket packages for university events. (Dean cautioned that there are specific rules for gift certificates). LAB will investigate possibilities
5. Lack of participation issue resumed. Problem of “perceived lack of supervisor support” apparently problem for some staff.
6. Building Concerns
Norlin Underground food & drink issues discussed
Fink is working with UMC on new signage
Patricia Morris is working on new building policy regarding food & drink policy
Policy will circulate internally among Library personnel before being posted
Cleaning Issues related to Norlin Underground
Possible alternatives for additional trash/cleaning problems generated by Norlin Underground:
Could arrangement be made with FacMan for cleaning of area?
Could UMC add surcharge to products sold to pay for additional cleaning services?
Possibility of giving library staff or students extra pay to clean area
It was agreed that library custodial staff is already inadequate for building, would not be realistic to expect them to be responsible for Norlin Underground cleaning
LAB was not certain how many custodians are now employed in Norlin
Campbell will check on current staffing, how it compares to number before budget cuts.
Norlin building problems online help site/log discussed
Fagerstrom to report back with more data
Issue of Norlin building problems/help site to be continued at next meeting
Dean reminded LAB that building concerns are important, is a “quality of work-life” issue - part of LAB mission
Agenda reviewed for next meeting
Next meeting tentatively set for Feb. 7 at 10:00
