Minutes: June 24, 2009

Attendees: James Williams, Lisa Gould, Holley Long, Sue Williams, Karen Campbell, Angela Palermo, Christina Howard.

The main agenda item for this meeting was to hand over the Green Task Force Charge to the task force volunteers, review the details of the charge, and the details of the report due in September.

The following individuals will be serving on the Green Task Force: Lisa Gould, Angela Palermo, Susan Williams, and Christina Howard (all from University Libraries), Chanhome Keovilay (Custodial Supervisor), and Marianne Martin (Environmental Center).

Lisa Gould will be serving as Chairperson of the Green Task Force.

Green Task Force Member, Angela Palermo, will be serving on the Materials, Paper Reduction & Waste Management Action Team as part of the campus' Carbon Action Plan representing the University Libraries.

Some of the additional information that we discussed in regard to the Green Task Force included:

The campus' Carbon Action Plan (CAP), hosted by the Vice Chancellor for Administration, has four (4) Sustainability Action Teams (as part of Governor Ritter's Greening of Government initiative). They are as follows:

  1. Data and Metrics
  2. Energy & Water Conservation
  3. Material, Paper Reduction & Waste Management
  4. Vehicle Petroleum Reduction

Marianne Martin, Environmental Center, supplied Lisa Gould with some additional information about how the Environmental Center can aid the Libraries in "Going Green" and aligning the Green Task Force agenda with that of the campus and the governor's green order.

The Green Task Force will set its own priorities and determine what it shall focus on initially. Its recommendations need to focus on all six libraries and also needs to incorporate the current green actions that have been ongoing within the libraries. In regard to the current green actions, the Green Task Force will need to determine what actions we should continue, as well as what issues need to be addressed immediately and may be implemented rather easily and quickly with little to no expense.  It must also address our long term goals and plans. This will include library walk through evaluations by the various departments of the Environmental Center to address issues, and detail the actions that each library can implement to address the issues noted. Information disseminated through a FSDC presentation by the Environmental Center about getting each Library Green Certified. Forming partnerships with various other campus resources and departments (example Environmental Center) to align, achieve, and maintain our sustainability goals. Developing a website detailing all our campus sustainability partners and our mutual resources, goals, and achievements.

The Library Advisory Board supports the Green Task Force in its work and recommendations. These recommendations shall include cost neutral or available funding information, and details of the equal roles of the custodial and the Environmental Center partnerships, as well as any other partnerships and alliances formed throughout this inquiry process.

The Green Task Force will present its final report and decision on continuation to the Library Council by September 20, 2009.

Respectfully submitted,
Lisa Gould
