Photography and Video-taping of Library Events

The issue of being filmed at Libraries events continues to be a concern to some staff.

Michael Riberdy has been working with University Counsel regarding a Photography/Filming policy , particularly about privacy issues. Riberdy has also been in contact with C.U. photographer, Glenn Asakawa, of Univ. Communications. He said according to Asakawa, the university policy regarding photography/video-taping of internal events has always been “unofficial” with no real regulations, official disclaimers considered necessary.

The university is now “re-thinking” this and a policy will be forthcoming. Riberdy said it made sense for L.A.B. to be addressing this filming/privacy issue right now and is good timing since the University is also working on it.

Riberdy requests that people opposed to being photographed at internal library events let him know before the event. L.A. B. agreed the following statement will appear in announcements about Libraries internal events:

“Video-taping, including audio-taping will occur at this event.”

It was agreed that people with concerns about this should notify Riberdy before the event.

Williams stated that if people do not attend Library events because of photography/privacy issues, they are free to make that choice. Library events will continue to be filmed and/or photographed.

Deborah Fink presented more information on the subject, and said the university uses release statements on various levels for any kind of photos which features an individual. She mentioned that release statements for formal presentations within the Libraries will continue to be in use as they are now. Fink also mentioned that a phone application with the release statement should be available in the near future.

University Communications/Use of Sub-Logos

Deborah Fink reported on the University’s new policy regarding the use of sub-logos. The University will be releasing a new policy stating no sub-logos will be allowed to be used for official communications. This would include sub-logos like the Libraries sundial logo. Only the inter-locking C U letters will be allowed. There will be no sub-locations used – e.g. University Libraries, School of Business, etc.

There will be no “sudden” enforcement, which means the Libraries won’t have to change the new signs immediately.
