Minutes: May 16, 2011

Only two items on the agenda for this short meeting:

Lisa Gould followed up regarding the no smoking signage with John Culshaw.  He checked with campus authorities and still hasn’t heard from facilities.  He acknowledged that there may not be a standardized sign for campus buildings. Jennifer Davis, the library representative on Staff Council said there was a proposal for a 5 year plan to be a non-smoking campus.  However, since the funding source for the educational program has dried up, now the plan is on hold. LAB will continue to monitor this issue.

Stephanie Yuhas brought requests from several staff members to have information regarding hours of the Laughing Goat coffee shop posted and announced more prominently.  Dean Williams recommended checking with Dylan Wiersma regarding the announcements regarding Norlin hours that are sent out as an email blast.  He could add the Laughing Goat hours to that announcement and differentiate them from the hours that the Commons is open.  It was also recommended that the Goat post hours on their outside door or on the curtain that covers the coffee bar when they are closed.  It was also recommended that Amy Arenson add this information to the signage that she posts on the east and west doors every academic term.  Another recommendation was that Cheryl Koelling add this information to the electronic monitor announcements…possibly scrolling the hours in the text at the bottom of the screen.  Another possibility was to determine if the recorded closing announcement for Norlin Library could be updated.  (It was noted that this message has been the same for decades).

Dean Williams recommended that the postings have a disclaimer – hours may change as circumstances  do – since there are times that the coffee shop closes without notice due to lack of business during slow periods.

Generally, the committee agreed that provided more information was a good idea.  Lisa Gould and Candy Gobrecht agreed to speak with the Laughing Goat staff and then to speak with Dylan, Cheryl and Amy about updating their various announcements, signs and video screens.

Update:

Candy and Lisa spoke with Timothy at the Laughing Goat about these issues and he was willing and cooperative to provide hours. He indicated that the Laughing Goat is in need of shades on 3 of the windows across from the counter and cash register. He said the employees at the Goat (including himself) have been having a terrible time with headaches and other discomforts due to the high glare from the sun through these windows.  Lisa provided this information to John Culshaw.
