Shelf furniture lying around Science Stacks (aesthetic)
Tried to talk to Brice, but he wasn’t in and since I know Dick pretty well I explained to Dick that we were just trying a new system out (he didn’t remember hearing about QFC). I asked him for seven minutes, we walked around Sci stacks looking at about 6 places where shelving furniture was stored, especially on old window sills….he acknowledged that it was something he had meant to clean up, had noticed it himself, has a new system of getting this stuff to Campus recycling and will do it. He said he felt it was fine just going directly to him about this.

Technical Services M150 Ramp Mirror
2008may05: Summary
This has been an issue a long time (Janet’s email) and is considered a health safety risk by some. Dan acknowledged that he got the request for this a long time ago but doesn’t ever remember funding for it being approved or a workorder and thinks there are some issues that make installation here problematic. Or maybe one was installed and got stolen very quickly? He got almost everything through Corporate Express. As Dan suggested there are some in that catalog. They go for under $100. Try again?
2008apr28: To TS. We're currently polling TS to ascertain the history of this request. The need for a mirror at the bottom of the ramp into M150, so people can see around the corner, has long been a complaint that TS people have made. Has anyone pursued this issue who can give me the history, or does anyone have any suggestions on how we approach this before I dive into the issue? Carl
2008apr28: History received from Janet Swann Hill, summarized:
I have requested this repeatedly, in writing, and in person, both as a single request, and as part of a long list of requests for TS fixes.
March, 1999. The first request was made as part of a consolidated list.
February, 2000. Scott's reply, summarized: "Dan will investigate “traffic mirrors” for the doors at the bottom of the ramps. It may be difficult to find an effective place to have them mounted (and mounted in such a way that they are not easily “liberated”). He’ll follow up on having the doorframe patched and ask to have a bumper or some protective sheathing put on the doorframe where it is most in danger of runaway trucks and dolleys."
March 2004. Message to Scott, summarized: The ramp leading to M150 poses a danger.Trucks and flatbeds come rolling down the ramp, often fully loaded and at speed. Collisions with people walking out through the double doors do occur. It's a miracle that we haven't had someone hurt. We asked for a convex "traffic mirror" to beinstalled at the top of the door in March of 2000. Please put in an order for this."
28apr28: To Jennifer and Tim: Not sure how much further I can take this without getting into Admin territory. (I guess I would go talk to Dan and find out what he knows. It's possible he just knows that it is impossible, or would cost thousands of dollars or something.) Please advise if I should take this any further. I don't think I should forward this email anymore though, but just go talk to Dan. It's a good example for discussion, even as it is. Carl
2008apr28: I agree that it is a good example for discussion. Personally, I think it would be a good idea to touch base with Dan on this in the event that he knows something that didn't get sifted back to Janet that last time around. If he doesn't know anything, I think taking this straight to John Culshaw would be a good move to make at this point. As Janet has mentioned (and QFC has echoed), that ramp is a safety hazard as it is now. Something needs to get done, even if that means squeezing the purse to get it done. Maybe QFC and LAB can be the metaphoric hounds at the door and get something done finally. Tim

Security Checkpoint Folders
2008may05: Summary
Security Check Point Folders are ugly, sometimes tattered, unprofessional (aesthetic)This complaint was taken to Scott and he told or wrote to Justin/Dan in Dec. that approved purchase of new pockets of some sort new system of pockets. When this was followed up by QFC with Justin in March , he had misunderstood since this was recommended by QFC, he thought QFC was doing the ordering. We explained that we didn’t order stuff, just made recommendations, and in March we forwarded him some links to samples they could consider $8-12ea. In April, we checked back with Justin, he said he had talked to Hilary and they decided they were too expensive, and they might change their system, maybe electronic. We suggested that maybe they might want to consider purchasing a few, where they are most visible, try them out and see how they work. None purchased. Are these worth it or not?
2008feb28: Sometime back the Quick Fix Committee asked Security to replace the checkpoint folders with something more aesthetically pleasing. I've spoken with Justin and he's certainly agreeable but isn't sure exactly what the committee had in mind. Please feel free to work with Dan Davidson to order 50 folders that the committee feels to be appropriate. Please, also, keep Justin informed. Scott
2008feb28: We were pleased that the OK went through for these. We will work with Justin because it will be good if these are not only
aesthetically pleasing but that they work, too. I don't think we have a particular item in mind, but have some ideas.
We'll bounce this around the committee "quickly" and talk to Justin. Carl
2008feb28: Our only need is that they can be mounted on a wall and hold an 8.5" X 11" sheet of paper. The ability to number them would be a plus. Thanks! Justin
2008mar03: These are a few things the QFC came up with:
http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/869195/Office-Brand-Single-Wall-Pocket-Letter/
This seemed to be the best price. Dark plastic might invite less graffiti? I saw some in wire mesh too.
If you want to look at Grainger for variety, search "Hanging Wall Files" if you want to see what they have:
http://ww.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg/start.shtml
We didn't see anything that specifically has numbering systems like you mentioned, but I can't say we have searched this extensively, so you might want to google around a little more the terms "Wall Pocket" or "Hanging Wall Files". Also, maybe you want to order just a few, or a couple of different ones at first and see how they work before ordering the big bulk? Just an idea. Can we just leave this issue now with you to finish up? It seems better for you to do the ordering and receiving rather than us. Carl
2008apr28: To Justin and Hilary. Could you please consider these again (sorry Hilary for not copying you initially). When I last talked to Justin, it seemed like you folks determined that they were too expensive, and that you might be changing systems anyway. I suggested to Justin that maybe there are some of these that are more unsightly than others and that some might be a priority to replace (one’s with graffiti, or that are right where a lot of the public might see them, for instance). I think the replacement of that one in the Hotspot is an example of one that was rightly improved. For example, there is one in the Art Library, just as you go down the stairs in the pink door, SE corner of rm. N275 that might be one that should be replaced sooner than others. Let me know what you think.
