Searching Chinook, the online library catalog for CU Boulder

Chinook provides access to the millions of holdings in Norlin Library and the five branch libraries (Business, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Math/Physics, Music). It includes books, periodicals, maps, compact disks, electronic databases, e-books, and more. To search for articles, use Find Articles and More.

Basic Searching
Keyword
Keyword is the easiest and most flexible way to search Chinook. It searches words in all fields of the catalog record: title, author, publisher, notes, etc..

Word searching combines words using connectors such as and, or, or and not. Note: If you do not use a connector in a keyword search, the words are searched as an exact phrase. Use the * as a wild card. In the example below, ecolog* will find records with ecology, ecologies, ecologic, ecological, or ecologically.

Search:

Title
If you know the exact title of the item you need, use a title search. Leave off any initial articles ("a" or "the") when you type in the title. If you are searching for a title of a journal, use the periodical title search.

Search:

Author
Type in the author's name, last name first.

Advanced Searching
You can also search Chinook by call number or subject headings and limit by location, date, or material type, etc. For more advanced search techniques, see the Libraries' handout on searching Chinook.

Tips on Searching for Maps
We estimate that more than half of the maps in our collection are cataloged in Chinook. All of the atlases, reference books, and CDs in the Map Library can be found through Chinook.

It is often helpful to limit your search to "material type: maps/globes". Many atlases and electronic maps are located in places other than the Map Library, so be wary of using the limit to "Location: Map Library".

Always remember that when you search for a map in Chinook, you are not seeing our full collection; you are only seeing what has been cataloged so far. Come to the Map Library and we can help you search for what you need.

Uncataloged maps are arranged in order by geographic area in drawers that can be browsed. We have a number of indexes and databases in paper and online that we can use to help you find the map you need. Please ask us for help.

Searching for Articles: Find Articles and More

To find articles, use the databases and indexes that the library provides. Choose the database you want from our alphabetical list or explore the subject lists for different disciplines. We have highlighed a few important databases for architecture and environmental design below.

Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals

The Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals indexes more than 2,000 periodicals published worldwide on architecture, archaeology, city planning, interior design, historic preservation, urban planning, and landscape architecture. Coverage is from the 1930s (with selective coverage dating back to the 1740s) to the present. The Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals is updated daily. It is the most important database for every aspect of Architecture. There is no need to ever use the term 'architecture' in your searches.
