Map Library Resources for Studies of Ancient Greece

The Map Library has placed many maps and atlases on reserve in the Map Library. The maps cover general geography, topography, geology, and more. The atlases have maps illustrating the history of Ancient Greece and other themes related to human and physical geography. In addition to these print resources on reserve, you may want to use some of the online resources mentioned below.

**NOTE October, 2004: : The class assignment has been completed and items have been taken off reserve. Please contact a Map Library staff member if you need help finding a map previously on reserve.

Online Maps

  • Ancient World Mapping Center : Maps of the ancient Mediterranean world, including maps showing administrative borders, terrain, cultural sites and cities.

Includes an excellent list of links to other map and geography web sites about the ancient Greek and Roman world including web sites focusing on archeological studies of specific regions and cities, many with GIS data for download. [Note: The AWMC has recently redesigned their web pages and some pages are not fully converted yet.]

  • Perseus Digital Library
Developed by the Department of the Classics at Tufts University. A great source of information about ancient Greece and Rome. Click on the "Classics" collection in the menu on the left. Includes primary and secondary texts and images.

  • Digital travel maps of Greece
A commercial site, but offers fairly detailed scanned travel maps of Greece showing place names and major roads. Explore the links on the left for other maps.

  • Ancient-Greece.org
Very nice maps of Ancient Greece, Ancient Crete, and Ancient Piraeus, and interactive plans of eight important sites, including the Acropolis and the Parthenon. (Use the menu on the left.)

Gazetteers
You can use gazetteers to find the latitude and longitude of cities, geographic features, and cultural sites.
  • Columbia Gazetteer
Three volume print gazetteer held in the Map Library and the Norlin Reference Department.
  • GEOnet Names Server
National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's (NGA) and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names' (US BGN) online database of foreign geographic feature names. Can be downloaded for use in a GIS.
  • Stoa Waypoint Database
"A repository of geographic coordinates for sites, features, objects, routes, etc. of the ancient world".
