Resources for Studies of Ancient Greece
CLAS/ARTH 4149/5149:
Greek Cities and Sanctuaries
The Map Library has placed many maps and atlases on
reserve in the Map Library. The maps cover general geography,
topography, geology, and more. The atlases have maps
illustrating the history of Ancient Greece and other
themes related to human and physical geography.
In addition to these print resources on reserve, you
may want to use some of the online resources mentioned
below.
**NOTE October, 2004: : The class assignment has been
completed and items have been taken off reserve. Please
contact a Map Library staff member if you need help
finding a map previously on reserve.
Online Maps

Ancient
World Mapping Center : Maps of the ancient Mediterranean
world, including maps showing administrative borders,
terrain, cultural sites and cities.
Includes an excellent
list of links to other map
and geography web sites about the ancient Greek
and Roman world including web sites focusing on
archeological studies of specific regions and cities,
many with GIS data for download. [Note: The AWMC
has recently redesigned their web pages and some
pages are not fully converted yet.]
- Perseus
Digital Library
Developed by the Department of the Classics at
Tufts University. A great source of information
about ancient Greece and Rome. Click on the "Classics" collection
in the menu on the left. Includes primary and secondary
texts and images.
- Digital travel maps of Greece
A commercial site, but offers fairly detailed scanned travel maps of Greece showing place names and major roads. Explore the links on the left for other maps.
- Ancient-Greece.org
Very nice maps of Ancient Greece, Ancient Crete, and Ancient Piraeus, and interactive plans of eight important sites, including the Acropolis and the Parthenon. (Use the menu on the left.)
Gazetteers
You can use gazetteers to find the latitude and
longitude of cities, geographic features, and cultural
sites.

Gazetteer
Three volume print gazetteer held
in the Map Library and the Norlin Reference Department.
- GEOnet
Names Server
National Geospatial-Intelligence
Agency's (NGA) and the U.S. Board on Geographic
Names' (US BGN) online database of foreign geographic
feature names. Can be downloaded for use in a
GIS.
- Stoa Waypoint Database
"A repository of geographic coordinates for sites,
features, objects, routes, etc. of the ancient world".

Other Possible Print Resources
The two books listed below are not on reserve, but
may be helpful to your research. Once you choose
an area of focus, search Chinook for
resources specifically about your chosen polis or
region.
