U.S.Geological Survey Maps
The Map Library has the USGS topographic map series, 1:24,000, 1:100,000, 1:250,000 for Colorado and all U.S. states. Older editions of USGS topographic maps (from the 1880s through the 1960s) are also available. These maps are located in the cabinets next to the reference desk.
Map Drawers
There may also be maps that show topography in the Library map drawers. To find them, search Chinook. Do a keyword search for the geographic area and “topographic”. (see Search Tips for help) Also, some maps may show topography without specifically being called a topographic map. Another place to look is in the uncataloged drawers directly under the call number drawers for Colorado.
Boulder
The Map Library has maps from the City of Boulder that show topography for the city at a 1:100 scale. There is a small amount of coverage for outside city limits, 1:200.
U.S.Geological Survey Maps
The Library has the entire U.S. Geological Survey 1:24,000 topographic map series (some southern and eastern U.S. states are in storage and can be requested) as well as the 1:100,000 and 1:250,000 scale topographic series. Older editions of USGS topographic maps (from the 1880s through the 1960s) are also available.(Located in the cabinets next to the reference desk.)
Map Drawers
There may also be maps that show topography in the call numbered map drawers. To find them, search Chinook. (see Search Tips for help) A keyword search for the geographic area and “topographic” will direct you to the proper call number. Also, some maps may show topography without specifically being called a topographic map. Another place to look is in the uncataloged drawers directly under the call number drawers for the state of interest. (Located in the east half of the library by the study tables.)
CDs
The Map Library also has CDs that contain seamless USGS topographic maps. These CDs cannot be checked out, but you may print from them on our color printer. The Map Library also has DRGs (digital raster graphics) which are scanned images of USGS topo quads for all of Colorado and some other places in the U.S. The DRGs can be checked out.
Atlases
The Delorme atlases on the metal stand by the map desk show topography. We have atlases for all U.S. states.
Map Drawers
- Call numbered drawers: Do a keyword search for the country of interest to find the correct drawer. (see Search Tips for help) Some maps may show topography without specifically being called a topographic map. (Located in the east section of the library by the study tables.)
- Uncataloged drawers: Some of our topographic sets for foreign countries are not yet cataloged. Look in the drawers directly under the call numbered drawers for the country of interest. (Located in the east section of the library by the study tables.)
- AMS World Series: These drawers have maps by Army Map Service (AMS) and Joint Operations Graphic (JOG), coverage is available at two scales, 1:1,000,000 or 1:250,000. (Located in the alcove in the southeast area of the library.)
- Aeronautical Charts, Tactical Pilotage Charts (TPC): Useful for areas where not much else is available. We have coverage of most of the world in this set at 1:500,000. (Located in the cabinets that hold the USGS topos to the right of the map desk.)
Road Maps
We have a collection of international road maps. Some road maps show topography, elevation, and/or land features. (Located in the green filing cabinet in the southeast corner of the library.)

GNIS: Geographic Names Information System (U.S.)
The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a gazetteer of place names in the United States. The database includes all named features on the U.S. Geological Survey 7.5' topographic map series (for example, populated places, streams, bodies of water, summits, buildings, forests, glaciers, cemeteries, etc.). Records usually include elevation, latitude/longitude coordinates, population (if relevant) and the name of the 7.5' topographic quadrangle map that contains the place and a link to a map of the area. GNIS also hosts the
GEONet International Names Server (International)
The GEOnet Names Server (GNS) (also hosted by GNIS) provides access to the National Imagery and Mapping Agency's (NIMA) database of foreign geographic feature names. The database is arranged by country, and is based on the Board on Geographic Names gazetteers.
Atlas of Canada: Gazetteer Map Service (Canada)
