Collection Needs Assessment Project
Patricia Morris, 303-492-3849
Christine De Vries, 303-492-8122

The Preservation Department is undertaking a detailed preservation needs assessment of the collections throughout the Libraries. The process is designed to gather statistically valid data on the preservation treatments required to maintain the Libraries' collections over the long term. To accomplish this we have developed procedures and forms that enable properly trained student workers to gather consistent data under the supervision of staff. The primary tool for training students, providing consistent data, and documenting our decision-making process is an online manual, which includes a training form. You may review the manual's contents, which include a description of the project and its goals, definitions of terms used, and the forms we have developed by clicking the link below, which will take you to the manual's index page.

As the project continues, there will be more information on sampling techniques and new forms modified to accommodate non-book media concentrated in particular parts of the collections. The sampling process should be complete in 2008, and a report of our findings will be issued. In the meantime, we will post interim reports of our findings for each strata of the collection as we complete them.

Norlin Library Facility Survey

Carl Stewart, 303-492-2249

Each library on campus is undergoing a broad preservation survey which examines the operation's procedures and the general condition of the collection areas with an eye to preservation of our collections. As part of this work, we extend environmental monitoring, identify and mitigate potential disaster risks, and educate the library staff and the respective building proctors to preservation concerns within each building.

A summary of the findings in Norlin Library is now available. Each branch's summary report will be posted as it is completed. The report for the Music Library will be available soon. Please contact Carl Stewart if you wish to review the complete report on each facility.
