Finding Journals at CU-Boulder
Access to journals is constantly changing. Some journals have both electronic and print access. Some have only print and some only electronic. Some journals end publication abruptly, such as TESOL Journal (Ceased Publication 2003).
Remote Access
Accessing electronic journals from off campus requires the download and installation of the VPN software on your computer. This software identifies you as a CU student allowing you to access databases and electronic content from any computer with the VPN software.

Scholarly Societies Project: This is a list of scholarly societies in education and their websites. It might provide some additional ideas on journals to use for this assignment.

The steps below will enable you to find the journals you choose for this assignment.
1. Search for the title in the Chinook Periodical Title Search
( http://libraries.colorado.edu/search/s )
You will often see multiple title records for journals, one for the print and one for electronic access.
Journal titles for print subscriptions link to a page with specific information on print and microfilm volumes available and their locations.
- You can check out bound journals (this does not include the most current volume and issues) for a week at a time.
- Some older bound issues might be located in PASCAL our offsite storage facility near Denver . Use the recall/hold button at the top of the page to request the item using your Identikey. The item usually arrives at the Norlin Circulation desk within 24 hours.
- Other older issues will be in microfilm, which is usually in the Media Library on the 2 nd floor of Norlin Library. There are microfilm viewing machines in the Media library, which also make copies.
Any journal title followed by [Electronic Resource] or (Online) will have access points for electronic content.
Example: Print and Electronic Access through Chinook
Searching Science Education in Chinook provides information on both print and electronic access.
Example: Print Access Only through Chinook
The Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, available 1976 to present, is located in the Math Physics Library . There is no electronic access to this journal.
2. Search for thel title in E-Journal Finder.
If you did not find the title through the Periodical Title search in Chinook or you would like electronic access and did not find it through Chinook use the E-Journal Finder. (http://ucblibraries.colorado.edu/research/ejournalfinder.htm ).
E-journal finder is a more inclusive listing of electronic access to journals. Electronic access is often limited to the past 10 – 15 years depending on the journal and provider.
Information for Authors
Once you have accessed your journal you will discover that information such as a “Note to Authors” and style requirements for manuscripts are often not included in the electronic version. Each provider (Ebsco, Wiley, etc.) provides a different interface and different information. Sometimes this information is available electronically through a link such as “about this journal” or “for authors” on the main access page of the journal. Otherwise, you will need to visit the publisher's website or access a print copy of the journal.
Example: Science Education available through Wiley provides information through Product Information and For Authors. You must be on campus or using VPN to access these links.
