Specifications and Procedures

Specifications and procedures for faculty for scanning and sending pdf files

1. Place document in Automatic Document Feeder of scanner. Some scanners have only hand-feed capabilities.

2. Using Adobe Acrobat 7.0+, from the FILE menu choose CREATE PDF, then select FROM SCANNER.

The scanning software should now be up. Your scanning software may vary depending on the brand of your scanner.

3. Choose the appropriate document feeder option. Make sure the pop-up menu for the type of material is set to Black & White, not Grayscale.

4. Set the dots per inch at 240 dpi.

5. Scan the documents, making sure that the first page of every document is the e-Reserve Cover Sheet ( pdf | doc).

6. After scanning, choose SAVE AS from the FILE menu. Type in the title, using all caps, exactly as you want it to be titled on your course list. Make sure that the file is being saved in a pdf format.

7. The file size should not exceed 3 mb. If your document is larger than this, you will need to break it into parts, each part being labeled as such, e.g. CERAMIC POTS PT.1 and CERAMIC POTS PT. 2.

8. PREVIEW your document, because what you email to us is what will appear online for your course.

9. When your file is ready to send, email it to reserves@colorado.edu Make sure that you keep a copy of the file, as we do not save the files beyond the end of the current semester.

10. If you encounter difficulties, call us at 303-492-3977.

We have posted a sample electronic reserve course listing in Chinook. There we have listed a crisp, clear scan of some material, another of a lousy original, a link to another website, a link to a professor's course website, and a link to a full-text article on JSTOR.
