University Libraries Outreach Program To Cease Operations

Due to declining financial support of higher education in Colorado, the 10-year-old K-12 outreach program of the University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries will cease operations on December 17, 2004. A series of recent budget cuts and loss of positions in the University Libraries has created a situation in which library staff will no longer be able to provide visiting K-12 student groups with organized instruction sessions or private instruction labs during their visits. Preparatory training sessions and in-school database access also will no longer be available.

Despite this change in service, the collections of the University Libraries remain open to the public, and visiting students are welcome to make use of library research materials as needed.

Research assistance will continue to be made available to individuals at the reference desks of the various libraries on campus.

Teachers wishing to bring student groups for research visits are asked to contact us at 303-492-0450 at least two weeks in advance so that we may offer planning advice.

Teachers are also asked to limit the size of visiting groups to 20 students or fewer and to involve the school librarian in the trip if at all possible. Due to the high number of researchers in the library each day, large groups may be limited to a relatively small number of computer terminals during the course of the visit.

As always, no group visits can be accommodated during the campus’ final exam periods (typically mid-December and early May). A complete copy of our K-12 group visitation policy is available here.

To the many K-12 teachers and school librarians who have brought student groups to the University Libraries in the past few years, I wish to thank you all for the support and interest you have shown in our outreach program.
