ERM Minutes
3-22-2006
Present: Baia,
Culshaw, Fong, Helgoth, Gobrecht, Austin, Jobe, Moeller, Wakimoto, Vicky Robl
(Serials Solutions)
- The
group welcomed Robl who gave a presentation on Serials Solutions MARC
records and Serials Solutions’ efforts to provide search, link, and
management services through their knowledgebase. The vast majority of Robl’s presentation
is duplicated in the materials Wendy Baia distributed before the meeting
(Full MARC Records Users Guide, Frequently Asked Questions, Managing Your
Data, MARC Record Customization Form) so only a few highlights will be
noted here.
- The
Serials Solutions’ knowledge base is a listing of e-resources that
includes title/issn type metadata. The
information goes through an authorities-based normalization process that
allows them to send just one record for each title to its customers. This normalization, or consolidation of
records, is a continuing process.
SS will try to fix any multiple record problems that are brought to
their attention.
- For a
library of our size Robl expects that SS can provide full LC MARC/CONSER
records for 80% of the titles in the databases we have access to. Other records from OCLC, vendors, and
Serials Solutions can be used together with brief records to cover the
other 20%. We can customize the
types and order of records to be provided.
- We
will have the ability to customize records for our catalog.
- We
will have the choice of using hosted (on a Serials Solutions’ server) or
direct links (in the 856s of the records) in our catalog. Hosted links will be updated more
frequently but require an extra click by the users to get to the
resource. Direct links will only be
updated in our monthly load but may work better with ERM. We’ll need to do some investigation on
this point. Vicky will provide more
information as well as a list of libraries with III/ERM/MARC Records use
similar to CU-Bs She thinks
licensing and public note display should work with either hosted or direct
links.
- After
we have turned in our profile form, SS will provide test records for our
review. We’ll have a chance to
revise our profile and then we can move on to the initial load. We will need a
III loader. If we go with the
direct 856 links we will have the choice of working with monthly Update
Files (new, deleted, and updated records only) or of deleting and
replacing all of our SS records each month. If we go with the hosted 856 we will
only need to work with the Update Files.
- The
Serials Solutions’ knowledgebase is being used by some libraries to populate
WebBridge. We’ll be able to export
the needed title/issn info through Data on Demand and load it into our
system. Serials Solutions chooses
to use the eissn if available but will use the
print issn when necessary. It seems
that we will be able to get a fairly easy/automated transfer of the needed
info from Serials Solutions to WebBridge.
